I need some recomendations on what I should use, ppg mx241 polyester primer or mar-hyde ultimate urethane or ultimate 2k. my friend says the mar-hyde is a good product but since I have started using ppg epoxy I thought I would stick with the same product line. Any other suggestions would be great, I just want to stay in the same price range, 50 to 75.00 gal.

If possible ALWAYS use the complete product line from the refinish manufacturer. Karl

Hold the boat here. MX241 is in the OMNI line isn't it? If that is the case, it is hardly PPG. In fact, it may be an "outside purchase" and not be made by PPG at all!

The Marhyde is not a bad product, but as Karl said, you really should stick to the same brand all the way.

Second issue. You mention polyester primer AND urethane primer, those are two COMPLETELY different animals. What exactly are you doing? Polyester is for SERIOUS surfancing. If you don't need a LOT of surfaceing like blocking waves or filling pits, you don't need polyester. Besides if you are going to compare prices you need to stick with the same technology. Polyester as a rule is much cheaper than urethane.

I don't think PPG has another polyester. I can say that polyester is a pretty low tech product and the "lower" grade Evercoat and PLC that I have used have performed flawlessly. I like the PCL the most.

Thanks Martinsr, I talk to the paint store and they said mx241, evercoat and pcl is all the same stuff, so I will go with the mx241 just to stay with the ppg line. Thanks again.

It is time to start questioning if your paint store guy knows what he is talking about. PPG, Evercoat and PCL are NOT the same. As I said before PPG may by out the product they put the OMNI label on from Evercoat or PCL or another company. This is very common on "value lines", it doesn't pay to make it. But Evercoat and PCL are NOT the same. Evercoat is thicker, med gray in color and has no recommendation for an etch primer under it. In fact they have in bolt print on the tech sheet "DO NOT APPLY OVER ETCH PRIMERS". While PCL is a little thinner, a very light gray and has recommendations to apply over an etch primer, which I HIGHLY recommend too.

If PPG has recommendations for an etch primer, go with it.

By the way to make my self clear on this "Evercoat" and "PCL" (Pacific coast lacquer) are two completely different companies. Their polyester primers may share the same basic technology, but they are NOT exactly the same.
