: air supply
chevelle 71 Dec 29th, 03, 12:57 AM Im am gonna try piainting my car myself soon. Im just wonder if my compressor is up to the task here are the specs 4 1/2 hp 21 gallon 150 psi max 4.4 cfm@90psi 11.1 cfm @ 40 psi I will be using a conventonal gun I also have an extra tank that I can hook up that will give me 32 gallons total thanks
zachscc Dec 29th, 03, 3:56 AM If you paint it one fender at a time maybe, but I would look into a compresor with a CFM@90 hating of 10 or more, mine has 13.5@90 and I just get by. Remember you are going to need a good water trap in Miami, probably 2. You should consider a HVLP gun from harborfreight.com #43430 they use little air around 10cfm, and cost about $40. You need to read stuff on here and do searches for a few weeks before you try anything.
MARTINSR Dec 29th, 03, 10:13 AM Theres a Harbor Freight gun that only uses 10 CFM? I thought they were SATA copies that need about 13?
I have looked and looked, I don't remember ever seeing any gun need less than about 13. That is of course unless you are talking the Sharpe Platinum (my favorite) that only needs 7.5. But I don't remember anything between the 7.5 and about 13.
lugnutz Dec 29th, 03, 9:08 PM Binks M1-G HVLP gun claims 10 cfm with 18 psi at inlet to yield 10 psi cap pressure. Comes with 1.4 fluid tip standard, but no hook on top. Blah blah blah. :D

69ssmike Dec 29th, 03, 11:09 PM I'm pretty sure the Binks is much higher, like closer to 14-15. The Sata RP is 9.3 and I spray at 20-23 at the gun.Not HVLP but very close!!! Can't tell difference in paint usage either. Mike
lugnutz Dec 30th, 03, 1:28 AM The binks website and all other documentation for the gun says 10 cfm.

GRN69CHV Dec 30th, 03, 9:45 AM I just bought the Binks M1-G. Haven't used it yet, but generally, Binks info is reliable. I've used a Binks #7 for 20 years. I have a no-name HVLP with a 1.6 nozzle for high builds that absolutley eats air. I was running this on a small compressor before I installed a large 2-stage in my garage and it never shut down from the time I pulled the trigger to when I finished spraying. You can use a small compressor, but it will run continuosly and ultimately will generate a lot of heat and moisture in the process. Don't know what you are going to spray, but if not metallic, I would suggest to do the car in small sections. {Rear clip, Door panels, fenders, etc} You could do metallics separately but it takes more practice and experience to duplicate the metallic appearance if done on different days. Doing a complete car without enough air is a real chore. By the time you start at one end and get around the car, the air supply will be very low for good atomization.
MARTINSR Dec 30th, 03, 10:17 AM But you are still in trouble if it says 10 CFM at only 18 lbs! FEW compressors at home could keep up with that!
If you havn't got the air you are just going to cause all kinds of problems with poor atomization. With an HVLP the CFM is very critical. If you don't have the air VOLUME to break up the paint, it is thrown on to the panel in large droplets full of solvent.
If I just couldn't come up with an air compressor and supply that could provide me with the CFM needed, I would not get an HVLP gun.
I painted many, many cars with a little 2 hp 20 gallon tank compressor with my trusty old JGA502 Devilbiss conventional gun. That may be the way you have to go if you don't have the CFM.

Off the topic of this thread, but I believe I had read where you were a rep for S-W, is this right? I would appreciate any sugestions you could offer to me for my upcoming paint job on my '69 at my home shop. My intention is to work my way around the car stripping, prepping and primering panel x panel until the whole car is ready. No real body work to do, only a couple of small dents to deal with. I was planning on stripping, filler, etch primer. Then go back and apply high build, block, seal and then BC/CC. S-W has paint distributor near me that would make things convenient. Specifically, what product numbers would you recommend for a home shop application for the primer, high build, sealer and BC /CC? I do have plenty of air and a somewhat controlled environment but definitely not a paint booth. Previously I have always used Lacquer or Acrylic Enamel w/ catalyst. {Believe me, I am looking forward to going HVLP this time. My old Binks #7 would spray everything in a 50 foot radius of the garage}.
