I am having trouble with my fuel gauge on a 68SS it never falls below 1/4 tank, even when empty. I assume the float is stuck so I was wondering if anyone knows a way to fix it without dropping the tank. I only have one arm for awhile due to an injury, so I can't drop the tank.

Thanks for any suggestions
Vic

Also I am kind of new to car repair and I have a built in factory tach that only works sometimes. I was wondering how and where the connections attach. I believe there are 2 wires and 1 I think goes to the coil.

I would verify the gauge is working properly first. If you ground the wire coming from the sender in the tank the needle should go all the way to E. If it doesn't then you have a problem with the gauge not the sender. With the wire disconnected from the sender and not grounded it should read full.

Here is a link to another post that shows where some of the wires can be found and how to test the guage.

Also, unless the 68-72 cars are different than the 64-67 cars, you shouldn't need to drop the tank to replace the sending unit. If you do need to replace it or remove it to check it out, you should be able to get it out without removing the tank.

Rich, You absolutely have to drop the tank to replace the sending unit on a 68  .

But I would check the rest of the system first, as others have said. I have seen plenty of guys on here with the same problem (do a search for gas gauge), it could be lots of things. I'd put money on a broken ground or a burnt shunt resistor on the back of the gauge.
