This is in a 71 chevelle but I have no idea what size engine it is. If you can tell from the picture what size it is (ie; 350 or ?) could you give me the pros and cons on that size if any??
Thank you so much,
Kel

You can't tell from that pic, could be anything from a 283-400, you need the numbers off the pass. side block, the pad just in front of the head, post them or get them and check them out at www.mortec.com .

Thank you. I feel like such a dork but I looked and looked and can't find it. The only thing I see is on the top rear of the engine (below and behind the carb) it's stamped Eldenbrock Performer. But on the passenger side I can't find a thing on the engine.
Here's a picture of the passenger side engine. Is there anyway you could point out which area I need to consentrate my search? I see the crome head covers but can't find what you describe as a "plate".

I'm not sure if this is the original engine. Did they have Eldenbrock back then? Or perhaps it was rebuilt and that top part of the engine added? The car has 62k original miles on it.

The surest way to tell what block you have is to find the numbers cast into the rear top surface of the block. The numbers are located towards the drivers' side and are fairly large and easy to read, providing that you can get back there to see them.
With the hood open, take a bright light and look down between the hood and the firewall. With some cars, you can see the numbers that way. If that doesn't work, look from under the hood with a light and a small mirror. If the motor is not too greasy, you should be able to read the numbers.
Chances are that there also is a date code in the same area and some other GM casting numbers. Make a note of everything you see.
Then go to mortec.com to find out what you have.

Its a pad, top of block where cylinder head mates to block, should be right behind alternator, right in front of passenger side head, if its a crate engine or its been decked, its likely there are no numbers, but the pad should be there. The numbers are stamped into this pad.

Remove the alternator it should be on the block that sticks out at the base of the head on front passanger side. You might have to clean the paint off.
