Hey all,

Does anybody have any suggestions on a good way to drill emblem holes? I realize it takes a drill and a bit... redface.gif LOL.

But-

What about pre drilling? Do you use a punch to mark the hole and put something on the back to keep it from creating a dent, like say a dolly? Last time I did this, I used a nail as a punch, and it worked OK, but it made a slight dent in the fender that I filled later. I would like to get around doing that again, if possible.

Then

When I HOPEFULLY get a dent free hole marked, what is the best way to drill it out? To use small bits up to the size of the bit the stud on the emblem is? Again, I DONT want to make more work by creating dents or nicks if possible!

Sorry to overcomplicate this, but if any body has any "tips or tricks" for doing this, it would be much appreciated smile.gif !

Like you said, use a dolly if the back open, most dont. Just use a sharp punch ,not a nail set.

Tape off the area with masking tape, measure, measure, mark, punch, drill.

I just use a very small bit without a centerpunch mark then go to the actual size bit needed. A 1/16" or even smaller bit is easy to control

I have a Dremel tool and was thinking of using that tiny bit to start off with, then going to the actual size bit. The thing that worried me about that is the bit not "biting" and whirling around everywhere else OTHER than where it supposed to be. Then again, I guess the speed would come in handy here

Maybe I'll try both methods on a scrap piece of sheet metal and see what happens. Im just not sure I have a good punch, but if they are cheap, I guess I can buy one.

when we put ours on i took a paint stick, the thing you stir the paint with.
mounted the emblem on it.got it perfect all the holes lined up. taped it to the car, made sure it was level. and in the right place. presto auotmatic pilot holes to run the drill thru.

Thats a neat idea!! Eliminates the possibility of the drill whirling all over the place! I'm going to try that idea..I can integrate all the ideas with this paint stick one. Thanks! ;)

DeWalt makes drill bits that have a small starting bit point on them, not the standard taper. They don't tend to wonder, at least if you're drilling straight on. Don't expect a soft wood paint stick to keep the bit from wondering, a sharp bit will eat sideways through it real easy. Not saying the paint stick is not a good idea, it is, gives you a nice template to work with.
