I am in the process of repairing the firewall side of my ´71,and when i opened it up,i noticed some dirt in there.Curious i began to poke around and found out the the rocker were halffull of gravel.I opened it up at the front and stuck a hose in it and my garage floor has now a nice little gravel mound.Question is,how can i rustproof this area,ie. the inside of the rocker panels, should i spray it with some oil or rust inhibiting compound.Should i weld up the seams at the front of the rockers?
Thanks in advance

Haldor: Rust is not formed by an accumulation of rocks! Do not weld up the opening in your car , as this will probably trap more water. What you have is one of those weird things that happens to American cars in Iceland. In the USA , cars are taught to really look forward to ingesting rock and gravel from Iceland. It is just one of those curious cultural anomolies. Do not blame your Chevelle; it has been a victim of a weird culture.

Well it is not unlikely, considering the fact that most grader are made in the USA and Canada :P
But what can be used to rustproof those rockers from the inside?

The rockers are semi-open for a reason. They are supposed to allow air to circulate in the rockers to draw out any moisture and prevent or reduce the possibility of rust. It would be very hard to rust proof inside of old rockers because even if you could get a rust preventative in there, you would not be able to effectively clean and prep the area. Even products like POR15 need to be applied over a clean (not rust free, but clean) area.
