: Made It Into The 11's At An Expense
Rock68SS Sep 7th, 05, 11:20 PM Good news, bad news night. Got one pass that was my best ever. Broke the rear on my next pass. It was a Moroso Brute Strength (Actually an Eaton 400lb Springs). Not sure where to go next. 3750 lbs 4500 launch with the 4 speed. Is smart to rebuild it or replace it. The ring & pinion look good, just broke the spider gears and the springs got lose.

Bob West Sep 7th, 05, 11:27 PM Hey Gene,,,,look at those pics,,,,Congrats on the new best, gotta love an automatic :D well, in my case, it took me a while to get a good one :( Do you drive on the street much? How about a spool?
Rock68SS Sep 7th, 05, 11:42 PM Some local cruise-ins. 10-15 miles each way. I trailer it to the track.
427L88 Sep 8th, 05, 6:32 AM I hear ya Bob. Rock, that sucks.... these cars are so friggin heavy that the shock of a clutch launch/shifts are just too brutal. I had a "bad vision" of running Old Red hard enough to do 11's, but alas, I broke a shift rod and clutch before I even began!
ANyway, nice timeslip! Can't beleive you trashed the spiders like that, that's fracture from shock.
( Bob, if I wanted to race the car more often, for sure I'd stuff a 4500 stall T350 in. )
mr 4 speed Sep 8th, 05, 6:36 AM I would run a Powertrax locker...no spider gears-no drama
427L88 Sep 8th, 05, 6:38 AM Sounds like a good solution.
71malibu406 Sep 8th, 05, 6:45 AM what transmission do you have? i can't believe the trans didn't break something befroe the rear broke. those 60ft times don't seem low enough to have put that much strain on the gears.
71454Chevelle Sep 8th, 05, 7:03 AM You might want to look into a "Tuned" differential from Tom's Differential.
The diff that I was thinking about when I replace mine is a "#5 Tuned" unit. He starts with a new Eaton and replaces the clutch pack with new steel clutches, does away with the springs, and installs U.S. Gear high strength heat treated spider gears.
Abit more than a standard Eaton posi, ( I think around $530 ??) but like Gene said, heavy car, high launch rpms, big block and a stick, it would be well worth it.

Rock68SS Sep 8th, 05, 7:29 AM I'm running a complete new AutoGear M21.
How is the Power-Trax locker on the street? Limited street use, just don't want to trailer to a cruise-in.
mr 4 speed Sep 8th, 05, 7:49 AM I have been running my Powertrax both on the street and strip for 4 years now with no problems...10,000+ miles and I bought mine used from Bill Burke.
BillsCamino Sep 8th, 05, 7:57 AM IMO, looks to me that the posi spring spit out of position causing the spider gears to crash.
I run a full steel clutch pack (no posi lube) and 800# springs which do very well on the street.
Yes, a Power Trax would also be a good choice.
70 beater Sep 8th, 05, 8:42 AM Old style powertrax.
Rock68SS Sep 8th, 05, 8:45 AM Just talked to Richmond. I would have to have the rear re-set up with new gears since my open original is a 3 series and the Eaton set-up I have is a 4 plus being a limited slip. Can't get there easy. Trying to find a shop that would put the steel clutches, 800# springs with new spiders. No luck yet. Anyone know anyone in central Ohio?

If rebuilding your current carrier is the way you wish to go, I'd send it to Tom's Differentials. One of the only companies I'd trust for it to last. You can even have it set up as one of their BOE setups...as bulletproof as you can make a posi.
Tom's Differentials does great work! But be prepared to wait awhile. I wanted to take my rear to them, but wait time then was 4-6 weeks with no guarantee that it'll be done then, but it was about a year ago. It case you didn't know Toms website http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/
DOUG G Sep 8th, 05, 12:25 PM I used to run a Moroso Super Brute in my 74 Blazer,4.56's and 38's. I went through 3 sets of spiders. The last time I found they were on Nat'l b/o. I went to another posi and then had my registration pulled for "materially altering vehicle after inspection" a month later (14 inspection tickets in 3-4 months) . The Judge told me return to stock, re-inspect, and gave me 3 years probation instead of 1 yr jail and/or $2000 fine. Parted the truck out.
ak69 Sep 8th, 05, 12:56 PM Detroit Locker. Then you can worry about the trans instead! :)
Got_CID? Sep 8th, 05, 1:38 PM Chalk up another plus for Toms Diffs. I bought my Eaton posi, gears and install kit from them and was very happy with the service and fast shipping.
mc71454 Sep 8th, 05, 1:55 PM The Old Style Powertrax Works !!!!!! Still pulling the front wheels up after 800+ passes on my powertrax...
It is great on the street...I have repeated and repeated this praise over the years, so lets hear who has one and Likes It.
Rock68SS Sep 8th, 05, 2:28 PM Where can you get the OLD STYLE Power-Trax[B]?
mc71454 Sep 8th, 05, 4:27 PM Where can you get the OLD STYLE Power-Trax[B]?
JEGS or I would recommend looking around on the web for various dealers. it will be called Lock Right or sometimes Lock Rite. it will be between $200 and $250. it will require an open differential or carrier. Posi units will not work. also Check Ebay.
Here Is One....

Bob West Sep 8th, 05, 9:12 PM Living in Ohio, you're not that far from Moser either, arent they in Indiana somewhere? My son has been driving on the street with a mini spool in his 9" for over a year, I havent driven my full spool on the street much, due to other problems, but havent noticed anything out of the ordinary, maybe a little binding when backing out of the driveway.
Steves65 Sep 8th, 05, 9:41 PM You could always call Currie Enterprises and get a 9" ford setup... can't go wrong with a 9 inch!

Rock68SS Sep 8th, 05, 9:59 PM Thanks for the links.
I appreciate the Tom's Differential referral but 5-6 weeks doesn't work right now with the track still open and flirting with the 11's.
Tom, so your link is exactly what your running? Hard to set up? I have 2 open carriers need to see what series they are. The Eaton\Moroso unit was a four series and I liked the 4:10.
mc71454 Sep 8th, 05, 11:09 PM Thanks for the links.

Yes, that is the version I am running except mine is older and had a coating on it that they thought would make it stronger, it didn't, so they dropped it. If you still have C-clips have a few skinny magnets to get the second C-clip in. If you have eliminators, piece of cake. You can literally remove it and replace it in 5 minutes after doing it the first time for 20 minutes getting the hang of it. It will take you longer to clean the old gasket off the diff cover.
The bulk of the time will be transferring your gears to the open carrier and setting/shimming that up again.
Don't get tempted by the more expensive "no-Slip" powertrax at around $430, it is weak.
bradford Sep 8th, 05, 11:19 PM i have done that myself. spit a spider right out the back of the cover. 4 speed also.
Rock68SS Sep 9th, 05, 7:37 AM Thanks Tom, I'm off to our big weekend automotive swap meet here in Springfield Ohio. Then I probably swing by Jegs they have it for $239.

anytime...
It will always be a spool when going in a straight line.
427L88 Sep 9th, 05, 11:05 AM Old Red's gunna be a show/cruise car. Man, too much drama running 11 sec clutch cars. Hat's off to Rock, mr68, etc for putting in the effort!
Anyone got a cheap 65 or 69 Bu I can build for racing!? :)
Cheap 65 or 69, yeah right. Camaro maybe.
Good luck Rock, hope you get 'er done quick and get back at it in the cool fall air.
Rock68SS Sep 9th, 05, 3:43 PM Tom, went to Jegs on the way home. The Lock Right didn't come with a cross pin. The instructions recommended Richmond's own but wasn't in stock. Thoughts on the cross pin needing to be special? Thanks in advanced, Rock
mr68 Sep 9th, 05, 10:04 PM one drawback to a spool on the street is it really wears out the pass side tire in a hurry(500 miles on et streets). the binding drags the tire around turns! if i did it over i'd run the detroit locker or the powertrax. the spool is lightweight though.

Nope, it isn't the weak point..The Lock Right doesn't come with the cross shaft. Just use a New set screw if you can, they can get batterred.
slpin Sep 10th, 05, 12:37 AM i couldf see you come out with a big smile... that was worth it!
imo, buy a new oone botl it on and go racing agian :)
Rock68SS Sep 29th, 05, 9:28 PM Back at it last night. I came out of the chute with a 11.850 at 116.4. Actually quite please. I did go with the Torque Right and 4.56 gears. I had to replace the ring & pinion and trap speed was at 5600. Why leave it when I could squeak more out.
But oddly I slide through out the evening and finished the 5th run with a 12.68. Not sure why. 11.94, 12.14, 12.59 then the 12.69. Clutch, tires? I have a 2 1/2 year old Center Force Dual Friction (90 runs/some street use) and the tires are Hoosiers drag (45 runs/no street). Track got cooler but car was getting hotter. Am I on track or could something else be going on? Recommendations
Bob West Sep 29th, 05, 10:40 PM Did your 60ft times coincide with the slower e.t.s? mph drop off too? My car slows when hot lapping and no time to cool it off, but not that much, I might lose a tenth, not a full second or dang near it. IMO 4.56 gears are waaaaaaaaaaay too low for 489 cubic inches, unless you are an 1/8th mile racer.
Rock68SS Sep 30th, 05, 8:25 AM I thought I might be leaving a little on the track since the trap speed was at 5600. When I did the 11.85 I was almost at 6000. Yes the 60's were dropping respectively. 1.756, 1.781, 1.808, 1.922, 1.941. When I ran my first 11.94 two weeks ago the 60' was 1.806. My thought is tires cool between rounds it is hard to get air into the bell housing.
427L88 Sep 30th, 05, 2:28 PM Cant hot lap a clutch car/ learned the hard way. It has to cool down.
70 beater Sep 30th, 05, 5:44 PM Some of our tracks are notorious for bad track prep as the night goes on,could that be it?
Rock68SS Sep 30th, 05, 7:30 PM I'm hoping. We have test & tune Wednesday then the Super Chevy this weekend. Lot of time between rounds. Couldn't find anything glaring tonight.
