Hey paint guys...Im going to be doing my car in a metallic...I painted it once already, so I know how to paint, but I have never done a metallic finish..I have the color I want in a single stage paint to do the door jambs and inside of trunk, etc...I mixed a small amount and shot an old hood that I had for practice. I got a mottled effect on most of it...it was really good only in the center...Im thinking I put it on too heavy??? I tried one light coat, but I came back with two heavier coats, and seeing as how I mainly wanted to see what the color looked like, I probably didnt wait long enough for it to flash off between coats enough. What is the accepted way to shoot a metallic, and will there be any big difference between the Centauri Im using now, and the base coat the I will be using for the rest of the car? Im using a HVLP setup to spray, but I dont know what the needle size is. Thanks, John

Johnny, If I were you stick with the bc/cc systems. I painted the first time this past weekend and shot my interior on my 65 elco and I sprayed a metallic color using PPG DBC it looks like a pro did it. It was so easy to do. Dont waste your time with the single stage metallics. The depth and shine of the bc/cc is just unbelievable.

Johnny, single stage metallics are very susceptible to mottling. A number of things can affect it, but I'll assume you've mixed the paint properly, correct air pressure etc. The two things that reduce the chance of mottling is allowing each coat to fully flash before applying another and make the last coat a "fog" coat to ensure even distribution of the metallic particles.

The base color of a bc/cc system is less likely to mottle due to having higher solids and less binders/hardners/clears that are found in single stage formulas.

Thanks guys...I will be doing all of the car in BC/CC, I just bought the rest of it today...Im only using the single stage to do the jambs and inside of trunk, etc. I bought is mostly to see if I liked the color once it was on the car. I think the problem was too heavy on the last two coats...and its good to know that the BC will be a little easier to spray..another guy I know told me about the last "fog" coat too, so I'll try that on the extra hood before I tackle the Chevelle. Thanks guys for the reply, I just wanted a little bit of a second opinion. Im sure it will go fine. John
