A friend of mine told me about this new epoxy that is used instead of welding on the quaters.. Has anyone ever used this? Humm.. I wonder what are the sideeffects of it?!? Will it hold up?

I have a friend that is a bodyman at a local shop and he uses that stuff all the time. He says it's as good as a weld. I don't know about welding 1/4's on a Chevelle with it due to the weight of the quarter, but maybe on some imports with smaller panels.

Panel adhesives works well in areas were the seems will not be seen, like wheel wells, door jams and the section buy the tail lights were you cannot see the seem. Reason why is with the panel adhesives you will have a read through line due to dissimilar materials not expanding and contracting at the same time. Just a note I have never used this material before, all of my info is from auto body store.com, Len Stewart. I highly recommend visiting this web site. They can answer any question. I have used this stuff before, but I, myself would have a hard time using it for hanging 1/4 panels. Just not worth the trouble if it fails......Big job to do over again.

When I redid my 65 El Camino. as always their were no 1/4 panels reproduced at that time. LAST SUMMER. and car 1/4 skins are shorter and the wheel wells are different.

what to do. get a car 1/4, cut it up and make the rest your self. on the gas tank side that meant a total of 6 pieces not including the parts for the inner gas tank fill opening lip. A puzzle indeed.
We welded the corners and pop riveted and glued the rest on flanged edges. Been a year a still holding up.I don't think I would use it for a full 1/4 but for patches, IMHO no problem. For my problem it was a god sent not to have 20 ft of weld to Finnish off

This is what I had thought too Jimmy P. I still like welding on quaters more than anyting but I was just thinking what if the quaters were tack welded in a few places to hold them up and then epoxyed in the rest where welding is a pain in the ass? Just wondering..

3M makes an adhesive for panels. I talked to them a while back and they say it is and has been (since the advent of the uni-body) used in virtually every new car on the road. They expressed no apprehensions about using it on any non frame member panel.
I didn't use it, sold the car and bought one that didn't need any panels replaced. I was sold on the concept though.

i use this stuff all the time. its good because it also seals the seams as well as bond them.you should weld the sail seam or anyplace you will see.although i have glued seams and still looks good after a year.it will hold up to anything, supposed to be stronger than a weld.its great for floor pans when you dont want to torch your interior.just make sure you grind the area to be bonded to bare metal.

I have read many articles on this and they have done tests and proved the glue bond is actually stronger than mig welding. I have been in the body shop industry over 30 years and I too am skepticle, but the collision industry as a whole seems to endorse it. I have always trusted 3M products so when I try it, that's the one I will use. I have also heard the applicator gun runs over $100 itself.
