I'm replacing the 230 6cyl in my kid's 65 Chevelle 4 Dr with a low miler 250 6cyl out of a 79 Blazer. I'm thinking its a better engine with the larger displacement, HEI and better carb. I see Comp Cams makes a cam for these, anyone ever try this upgrade? Am also thinking about splitting the exhaust. Is there any way other than cutting the manifold?, ie perhaps a short fork tube out of the primary outlet and then splitting from there? I see this on motorcycles. Any advice, comments re: stepping up a 250 6 banger would be appreciated.

This should address your exaust needs:http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/

I've built several turbocharged 6's and in fact have a set-up for one out in the shed. They are pretty easy to put together.

Have fun!

If you're interested I have a Clifford aluminum four barrel intake I'd sell.

1980 - 1984 250 pickup engines used a pair of 3-into-1 exhaust manifolds & a staged 2-barrel carb. The '79 is basically the same as a '75 in that it has the integrally cast intake manifold into the head (can't add the Clifford intake manifold or whatever). You can swap an earlier head (or a 292 head through 1988) that had the separate intake from the head. If you just want the parsimony of the six, keep the head and work on the exhaust. The HEI is a good bet no matter what. 1979 was the last year for the 250 in passenger cars (Camaro, Nova, Big Chevy) and it was the last year for the 1-barrel (292 truck sixes excluded).

Cam, wouldn't his '65's original head be the kind that uses a separate intake? I'm not saying that I know what I'm saying, because I don't, but my brother's 69 Nova had a 230 with a separate intake.

I might be interested in the intake. I had a 75 truck with a 250 and it had the manifold cast into the head. My 66 230 has it separate.

you could get an exhaust manifold on ebay that has the 2 outlets and it fits the integral head aplications.. it costs around $100 plus shipping.. just type "250 chevy" in the ebay search box. its a fairly cheap alternative to getting dual exhaust. i think ill get one for my 250 six.
