I wasn't overly impressed, but wasn't dissappointed either. From my dyno #'s (328hp/318tq), I was expecting to run 104-105mph and run some low 13's on street radials.
My best pass today was 13.55@102, shifting about 6400. Actually made two almost identical 13.55 passes back to back, only a couple thousandths difference. 60' times were 2.1 on street radials, I was launching from about 2000, and having to modulate the throttle a little on the launch to control wheelspin. It launched nice and straight though. My '02 Z28 made less than 10 more hp at the wheels, yet ran 108 in the 1/4. I guess the difference is weight and aerodynamics.

On my last pass something wasn't right, 13.7@100. When I got it parked and listened under the hood I noticed some faint valve ticking. Hopefully just a couple of rocker arms that loosened up, which would explain the slight power loss. The car hadn't been run that hard under load since my initial valve lash on the new engine. The car ran fine on the 75 mile trip home, so I think it'll be fine after a fresh valve adjustment.

On every pass I was getting some pretty harsh chassis vibration on the top end over about 90 mph. I know one of my tires was slightly flat-spotted after I bent a rim on a pothole a while back. It felt like either that or maybe the driveshaft.

I had really hoped for better than 102 mph, perhaps with some more tuning and cooler air I can get 104 out of it. All in all I can't complain though, it ran pretty decent for a little ol' small block in a big heavy brick of a car, and I spanked a couple of ls1 camaros. It also garnered more attention than most of the other cars there, my buddy said people would run up to the fence to watch me run. There was a little head scratching going on when they saw the 'stock 307' under the hood as well. :)

i would say put some tires on it and see what it does. can't be too unhappy for the first trip to the track on street radials.

after looking at your combo, i'd want more gear and a little more convertor. with some sticky tires, 4.10 gears, and a 3500 stall i'd bet money that you'd be well into the 12's.

Is it still the same calibration as the chassis dyno tune? If it is, ask your chassis dyno tuner if he thinks any changes should be made at the track. Many times I've heard others mention that their chassis tuners have suggested that a jet change would bring it closer to optimum at the track.

Your combo page doesn't state what gear you're running in the rear.

I can tell you that your 60ft is hurting. What was your MPH at the 1/8th if your track provides this? My buddy runs a '70 that usually hits 75mph at the 1/8th and he's been pulling down 2.1x 60fts on a normal bases. He's run from 3.08 to 4.11 gears in the rear and all have been able to 60ft somwhere in the 2.1xx area, with the 3.73 getting the current best times and 4.11 real close to that.

I'll leave the suggestions for changes to someone more experienced.

In my opinion, 102mph on your first outing isn't too bad if you were expecting 104-105.

Were your chassis dyno numbers corrected or uncorrected?

Good job. Keep after it.

Slowpoke, the dyno results were SAE corrected, but the uncorrected numbers were actually almost the same (I had very good weather conditions on the dyno day) 1/8th mile times were 8.7's at around 83 mph.

I havn't made any more adjustments since the dyno session. The carb looked to be right on the money judging from the air/fuel readings on the dyno. If anything it's a tad on the rich side. We also got the timing set pretty good on the dyno. The car pulls very smooth and even all the way to the top, there are no 'flat spots' in the power band. I suspect that good valve re-lashing might yield a little more power, but I really think it's tuned pretty well. I think the shift kit in the transmission actually could use a little work to shift harder, I might gain a little there.

I'm running 3.42 gears, and the low profile 17" tires don't help either. The car is more set up for 'pro touring' more than the 1/4 mile, so the poor 60' times were expected. I don't plan on changing the gearing, it's already geared a little high for the highway, with no OD.

Man, I've only got a short time let in summer here in Buffalo to catch up with you. As you know autocross is this Sunday. And maybe after I get back from vacation I'll try to catch a strip date before the snow flies. Glad to see you are running her.

BTW I have abosolutely no idea how to help your times out.:D I haven't been to the track once yet.

Remember, your photos are our friends. Your car is cool to look at.

Nice run! Man, you're lil "stock 307" is running better 1/8 mile ets then my 388ci :( Then again, you've got better heads and cam over me :) My best 1/8 mile run was an untuned 8.80@79mph.

The dragstrip is a humbling place  Congrats and keep on tuning ;)

I wish I'd have re-lashed my rockers before I went. I did it monday, and set them a little looser. Before I had added about 1/4 turn with the wrench after getting the nut finger tight. The feeler guage was hard to pull out from under it.
This time I just did them finger tight to get the play out, and locked it down right there. Feeler guage pulled out pretty easily.
The result was alot more valvetrain noise, but a noticeable seat of the pants improvement at WOT, I was surprised! This engine seems to like the rockers slightly looser.
Now I just need to get back to the track...

Slightly loose lash usually helps low end, tight lash helps top end.

Next time out try some different launch rpms. I tried to leave on the converter as you are and it hurt my times (2200 stall and with traction will flash to 2800ish). When I was running street radials I would leave just off idle and roll into the throttle quick, but too quick it would spin so there's a fine line. I think with enough practice you could see a 1.9X or at least a 2.0X.

nice job Brian..now get some sticky tires!! Low 13's/high 12's easily w/traction
Remember, optimum dyno numbers do not mean optimum strip performance.

yeah, exactly! I need some DR's!

I was searching for pictures of your "stock appearing" engine, and I could not find any. Is this still with a stock air cleaner and manifolds? Nice times!

I need to update my website with the new pics.

here's one that I've posted before here. No stock air cleaner or exhaust manifolds. But those are $99 headers :)

But those are $99 headers :)

Shoot, ALL my future headers will be $99 cheapos. My $300 ceramic coated ones went to looking like crap after about one year of street use. My $59 headers I bought when I was a teenager, then stripped and painted with BBQ paint, looked nice for years.

Are you running roller rockers? Did you have to use spacers to raise those valve covers?

Yeah, comp pro magnum 1.6's, I have doubled up gaskets under the valve covers. So far it's worked fine like that, no leaks!

Very nice engine! Love how it has that 'stock' look! Id say its running pretty good, with some tires and some tweaking, you may have a future 12 second '307' chevelle! LOL!
