Dean,
If you have XP ... go to control panel, click on add/remove programs, when it comes up look down the left side and there is an icon for "remove windows components" , click on it and you will find Windows Messenger there.

Thanks Bill

I didn't see it there but I did see MSN Explorer there and put a check mark in the box but it wasn't removed.

For XP Pro:
1 Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2 Click Administrative Tools
3 Click Services
4 Double click Services
5 Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
6 Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7 Click the STOP button.
8 Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9 Click OK

For XP Home:
1 Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2 Click Performance and Maintenance
3 Click Administrative Tools
4 Double click Services
5 Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
6 Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7 Click the STOP button.
8 Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9 Click OK

Thanks !

That worked, well all except #8 as I didn't know where that was located.

{edit}

Well it came back :(
This time I did find the #8 and disabled it.

Thanks again. :thumbsup:

This is the best way to ensure it is completely removed. Just depends on which Patch you have installed. I always use the top one and never had a problem with it.

On XP Systems without SP1:

Click Start / Run Then type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart Windows

On XP Systems WITH SP 1:

Control Panel
Add / Remove Programs
Click on "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left
UNcheck "Windows Messenger"
Click "NEXT"
Click "Finish"
Reboot

NOTE: the second method does not work on every system - you may still need to use the first method

That's the best way I've found.
