I will be dying my interior parts on the red car soon and ordered two quarts from Just Dashes. Last time I used their paint I used the spray cans that you fill with paint. They worked ok but wanted to try one of those inexpensive HVLP guns.

My question is can I run any of these without a problem - I recall someone telling me I have to watch the cfm on the gun.

My compressor is a 5.5 HP 20 gal tank

8.6 SCFM @ 40 PSI
6.4 SCFM @ 90 PSI

The guns I am looking at are all HVLP gravity feed from Harbor Freight :

20 oz requires 1-3 HP, 50-60 PSI and 14 CFM of air consumption - Price 29.99

20 oz requires - doesnt say, 15 - 50 PSI and CFM 9.5 - 14.8 - Price 39.99

10 oz Detail HVLP - 43 PSI and CFM 3.7 Price 56.99.

Will either one of these work well? I will be just using to dye my dash pad, dash board, kick panels, console and seat backs.

Any input would be great.

No i wouldn't use an HVLP with that compressor.A non HVLP should work fine though.

I also have a conventional suction feed gun. Do you recommend I use my conventional gun with this compressor for my BC/CC and should I expect better results, as long as atomization is correct ?

Rich...I have a 20 gal. 2 h.p. compressor that I've been using for 15 years to spray more things than you can imagine.
I use it not only with all the "car stuff" but all the spraying I do in my business as well. I have a Sharp Cobalt HVLP gun($160.00) that I use to spray cabinets. I've sprayed continuously for hours and I have NEVER run out of air. The finish comes out perfect every time. I also used the HVLP gun and 20 gal. comp. for etch and filler primer on both my Chevelles. I painted all the semi-gloss parts on both Chevelles too including the bottom of the hood and car.
My point: You will have plenty of air to paint anything you need to. I use it every day in my business with no problems. I know you do woodworking as a hobby. The HVLP gun would work well for that too.
I wouldn't buy a cheap gun. If you if you spent around $150.00 you will be able to use it for many years. You will not like a 40.00 gun. It's worth the extra $100.00 to get a gun that works. Someone gave me a $30.00 gun a few years ago. I used it for 5 mins. and stuffed it in the garbage.. Bill

Thks 70,

I have a touch up gun, suction feed 2.8CFN @30 psi 4.0 CFM @ 50 with a 7 oz cup - would that work ok?

Hey Bill - must have posted when you were posting. Good point - but for now just looking to go the cheap route - the spray can set up I used last time actaully worked well on the green car when I did the door panels over - just thought it would be easier or just as good results with an inexpensive gun. I do have the touch up gun as mentioned above - I may trial it and see how it goes.

Try doing a search on 'hvlp cfm' in this forum and you should get plenty of info. HVLP needs a lot of air. A conventional gravity style gun should work ok with your setup for spraying small stuff.Your compressor is 8.6 cfm @40 and most HVLP's want 11-14 cfm. If you ask me its easier for a beginner to spray with a conventional gun vs an HVLP.Astro makes a decent gun for the money, here's (http://www.sktoolstore.com/astro/astpai03.html#gf14s)
a gun i would reccomend for you. The Gravity Feed Spray Gun w/ 1.4mm Nozzle. 1.4 is a little large but good all around gun. Also watch your hose length.Anything over 15 feet will kill your air pressure. You should be able to get that gun locally, i just used that website for reference i'm not recommending you buy from there.

Don't buy a spray gun from Harbor Freight. Go to your friendly neighborhood Lowes store. They sell a good quality Ingersol Rand HVLP gun for $59. It requires 4.5 @35 psi. I think that you can also buy it online (http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=221117-28309-210G).
