: Modifing modern mirrors

Ive decided to add some modern mirrors to my 70 chevelle. Got them where I want them but have a very small gap towards the glass roughly around 1/8". Filing down the base too close the gap is not an option as it will then infer with the bolts.
My question is anyone know of a product that I could use fill that gap? I was thinking of taking some fiberglass cloth with some rigid plastic repair adhesive to build up that part of the mirror then file it down til I got the gap filled. Or even getting another mirror and glue chucks of plastic to the mirror and then file down

The mirror is off a 92 Olds 88, dont know the excat plastic type but I do know is a thermoplastic not thermosetting. Am open to any ideas. Thanks...Eric

You have pictures? Are they the same mirrors I have on my Malibu? I'm just curious how you got them to fit the '70 body lines.

Derek, Ill get some pics later today when I go to the shop. Do you know what type of mirrors your car has on it? I wanna say they have a longer or taller base. The longer base would work a bit better. I compared them to mirrors from my 92 buick and the buick mirrors look taller then the olds mirror.
As for getting them to fit, it was a really BIT#H  Dam things fit like they were made for it.

If you let me know what they are off of I can see on the shop's computer if they are indeed the same.

By the way when's the NCC club meeting? Hopefully it be the on the weekend of around the 18-20 as Ill be in Shokpee, MN for an Icar painting class, save me a trip up there...Eric

Edit got those pics Derek. Am not 100% sure I like the mirrors on there. Its one of those things I got to kick back and think about it.
AM gonna do some more playing around with them to find the right spot

THE first pic shows the gap, kinda hard to see.

This done pretty often in the "Street Rod" world. You can do it a couple different ways, but the one I like best if the mirror is plastic is to build the edge up with "glass" and file it down to fit.

If the mirror is pot metal, or Chrome I'd shape a rubber plastic pad to fit the mirror base to the car.

If the mirror is metal you can weld to, then tack a shoulder to the edge and file it to fit.
Lotsa time.

my mirrors are from a 95 buick lesabre and look exactly like those. They fit '68/69 doors with no modifications, only drill 2 holes.

The meeting is THIS SATURDAY the 13th at Jim Roy's house in Lakeville. You should have gotten the email about a week ago  I'll try to re-send it to you graemlins/thumbsup.gif
