I'm looking at a 92 Cherokee to use as a winter beater. It has a six banger, 4wd and is basically a stripper with 190K on it. I have no other info other than it has a great body; no rust or dents and it needs tires and a battery. I can grab it for 750 bucks. Anyone have any experience with these? What trouble spots should I look for. What kind of gas mileage can I expect? Thanks for the help....

I currently have an '01 Cherokee with the 4.0L inline 6...I love it...no problems so far...

My dad bought an '89 Cherokee brand new with the same inline 6...we had it until '03...when we sold it it had well over 200k miles on it and still started and ran great every time...only thing we replaced in 14 years was the radiator and of course a couple sets of tires...and when we sold it we replaced it with another Jeep ('00 Grand Cherokee - also never had problems).

Although they are "only" inline 6's, they are very torquey engines and the run good and strong...as for gas mileage, I get 15-20 mpg, but I also have a 3" lift and 32" mudders!

For $750 I'd say it's worth the price as a winter beater...check out www.jeepforum.com as well...lots of information on there to help you out too...

i say jump on it. we have a 96 Grand Cherokee, and i love the thing. 4.0 l6 in it. 190hp 210 ft lbs tq. great little thing. my friends and their dads have cherokee classics like you are looking at. nothing a problem with them. all of our jeeps have over 175k miles on them (yup even my ZJ), and all start up on 1st try, and all run real good.

i say for 750.00 go for it. put some good tires on it, and you will most likely own it till you pass away.

The Jeep 4.0 is one of the best engines made. They are indistructable. They arent very good on gas mileage.

I'm a service manager at a Jeep dealership. As the others have stated the 4.0L is an excellent engine. I have customer with over 300,000 miles on their 4.0's and no problems, noises or smoking whatsoever.

No particular problem areas really. I have a 90 myself, I picked it up as a TRADE IN for $700 and couldn't be happier. I put about $500 into it and have a reliable depedable 4WD beater type vehicle.

For the money, GO FOR IT!

I have a '94 2 door with 4.0 and 5 speed. It has 179k on it and has spent it's entire life in the midwest, so it has seen some salt. Here is my gripe list:

Engine: Indestructible. Lots of torque. Does not smoke, even with 179k, but it does leak some oil. I think it's coming from the main seal. For now it's just providing some corrosion protection on the underbody. I've heard from other Jeep guys that this is very common. Mine leaks about a quart every few weeks at 10k miles a year.

Trans: Great, except even with 5 speed the truck runs out of gear at around 70mph. Low range is awesome.

Transfer case: Put it in 4 low and idle your buddies out of snow banks this winter. Have had no problems whatsoever.

Chassis: My rear shackles are starting to rust out. Don't know if this is common or not. The front sway bar has an annoying squeak over speed bumps. Rear leafs tend to sag badly on many models.

Don't think it was offered for '92 model year, but DO NOT buy the 2.8L model. It is the same GM 60deg V-6 that was in S-10 pickups, and it sucks.
