What is the best clear to use to produce the highest gloss mirror look on top of my Crystler flame red PPG DBC Deltron 2000 base coat? I have been told to apply two light to medium coats. Let it cure for a few days or more (a week if I have the time) then wet block with 1500 grit and swirl polish with 2000 grit before my last 2 coats of clear. Does this sound like the best route? Also I was told that I should use PPG's 970 reducer with the clear and base since I am able to keep my home made booth between 70 to 75 degrees F consistantly. Thanks for any advice.

Do not buff or swirl polish between coats of clear. The suggestion to clear the car then sand and reclear is known as application of a flow coat. When applying coats of paint and clear the more coats applied at one time will usually increase the amount of texture and foriegn materials in the finish and reduced gloss do to solvent retention, so the recomendation to apply the color then two coats of clear then resand is an operation to combat the effects of this. If you apply the color then two coats of clear and resand with 800, or 1000, or 1500 the two last coats of clear will flow like glass. I prefer 800 grit for sanding between coats of clear. Remember cleanliness is very important, especially between coats of clear as anything trapped between the coats will be there forever. Many clears are available for use over DBC, in fact the ppg reps in my area are pushing the use of clears out of the Global line for use over DBC. I've used Global 893 and 894 over DBC with great success. Waiting a week before application of the last two coats of clear would be best. The majority of solvents would be purged from the finish allowing the last two coats to flow nice and hold gloss well.
