: why no front springs for 70 chevelle from moog?
ogopogo Aug 31st, 05, 4:48 PM I tried to order some front springs today for our 70 chevelle 454 auto with a/c but the parts guys tell me that they only have listings for 69 or 71 ,not 1970,is this true?I would assume I can use 71 front springs, are they the same?thanks!
John_Muha Aug 31st, 05, 5:16 PM The 71 springs should be the same. Basically the same car.
Bomber '67 Sep 1st, 05, 12:16 AM Here's your spring chart:
http://www.hal-pc.org/~rthlc/68-72_front_springs.html
The missing chart header is as follows from left to right:
Moog#, coil diameter, coil ends, wire diameter, installed height, load rating for sprung weight, rate in lbs/inch, free height.
You should really weigh the front end of your car and then deduct the weight of your unsprung items: tires, wheels, hubcaps, spindles, brakes, lower control arms, and coil springs from the front end weight to get at the spring load rating that is needed. Most Chevelles have an unsprung weight of ~ 220 lbs - much less if it is all lightweight drag stuff.

chevry Sep 1st, 05, 1:53 AM Partsamerica has listings for TRW springs for the 70 model. MOOG and TRW are owned by the same company now, and I think Perfect Circle is too. Their springs all carry the same part #s shown on the above chart.
In fact, I think Federal Mogul apparently now owns the majority of aftermarket parts, including DANA and Wagner, I think. Unfortunately, IMO, quality has gone down to match TRW, rather than up to match MOOG. You can see a big difference in steering parts quality as of the last few years.
ogopogo Sep 1st, 05, 3:46 AM thanks for the help, the car is completely stock(ss wheels) ,so stock specs on unsprung weight should apply, looks like I need a set of the 5450`s,thanks guys!
zrwhat Sep 2nd, 05, 11:10 AM Let us know how the install turns out with the # 5450. I want to raise the front of my 70 396 convertible loaded with air and tons of power items like windows and seat , I've been told the #5450 will do the trick, if anyone else has used the #5450, chime in and let us know what results you've had using this front spring.
Thanks,

BUDS1970 Sep 2nd, 05, 12:36 PM Did you try NPD?I just replaced the rear springs on my '70,and they were very reasonable on price.Hardly nothing for shipping either.
Tom S Sep 2nd, 05, 7:47 PM I was told that the Moog 5400 were the taller springs for Big Blocks that gave it a more aggresive stance. Anyone use either the 5400 or 5450. The 5450 have a highter installed height but the rate is lower. I don't want it to ride like a boat.

70ChevelleRagtop Sep 3rd, 05, 8:45 AM I have 5450's installed on my ragtop. Pics are in my signature.
zrwhat Sep 3rd, 05, 4:34 PM 70ChevelleRagtop,
Thanks for the pic of your car with the #5450 springs, I was hoping these springs would give a car more ride height then I see in your car. I guess I'll be sending the 5450's I just ordered back and try to figure what spring will give me more ride height in the front, my 70 SS 396 Convertible is loaded down with air, ps, pb, pw, pdl and power seat and sure is heavy up front, I'm trying to give it the 60's "Yenko up in the air look" , yours has a nice stance but not quite what I'm looking for. Anybody else have any suggestions on what spring to use to gain an additional 1.5"-2" more then Dana's good looking 70 convertible?

rbeckman Sep 3rd, 05, 8:54 PM I work for TRW aftermarket and TRW does not make springs. There are agreements with Federal Mogul to use the TRW name on some of the suspension parts.
