I have a problem. Before I bought it someone replaced the front fenders on my 1970 with original GM 71-72 fenders. They are in excellent shape but, of course, are missing the side marker lights.
I know I can take them off and replace them but then I would have to incur the cost of painting, etc. and I don't think that repro fenders would be as good as these GM pieces.
I have left them up to now because they look so good, but I would really like to have those '70 fenders. Should I even consider cutting the fenders (a friend suggested this, but it doesn't seem like a realistic option to me)?
Has anyone else faced this situation? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

The 70 verse 71, and 72 are totally differebt inside. You can't cut for the side marker light. The repro fenders are fine. They're made from the original toolong by GM. I put em on my 70 with excellent results. You can get em new at swap meets for about 225.$ a peice. I'm sure you can resell your old fenders to a 71-72 fan trying to restore their own ride.

I put a repro fender on my 72. It's junk. It's coming off and will be replaced by a NOS fender I found. I'd try to have a body shop cut yours rather than go with a repro.(I'd do anything before using a repro!) Check them out at a swapmeet and you can see the thinner gauge metal. Plus the spot welded nuts all came out when I bolted my hood on! Just my experience. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the ideas. And you both have experienced what I have heard about repros. Noneck, who was the manufacturer of the repro you tried? I have heard better things about Goodmark.
I'll keep my eyes open and visit a few swap meets. I kind of thought cutting my current fenders was not a great idea.
By the way, I visit your site often, Noneck. Keep up the good work!
What do you guys think a set of perfect GM 71-72 fenders are worth?

do you have 70 or 71-2 headlight extensions?if you have 70 extensions than i would say the fenders are already modified because the inner brackets that they bolt to are different.if someone already modified that i would find some junk 70 fenders and cut off the lower section where the marker lights are and section them in on your fenders.I made a 71 fender work this way.drill out the spot welds on the extension brackets and,put the 70 bracket in the 71 fender and splice in the lower section off a 70 by the marker light area

Yes, I have the '70 extensions. I never realized that there was a difference between the 70 and 71/72 front fenders other than the lights. I will keep an eye open at swap meets, that sounds like a definite possibility.
