View Full Version : Windshield wipers
rianbechtold Aug 28th, 05, 3:29 AM Ok, this windshield wiper SYSTEM has me all confused!!! I have a painless kit installed on a 71 chevelle malibu. Now, the whole wiper system doesn't work, if i turn them on, there is a click but nothing else! So, i'll start over, can someone explain which wires go to which terminals on the switch? There are three so i'll do this:
Terminal closest to steering wheel-
center terminal-
terminal furthest from steering wheel-
Also, i need to know high speed, low speed, and power (not just colors)
Ok, and now the motor/pump. What two wires go to the two terminals on the pump (top)?(Looking at the terminals head on/facing the two terminals)
Left terminal-
Right terminal-
Now the three terminals, what goes to those (again looking at it head on)
Left terminal-
center terminal-
right terminal-
Ok, i know the power wire goes from one of the top terminals to one on the bottom terminals, which ones?
Thanks for your time!

John_Muha Aug 28th, 05, 10:48 AM There is no power wire. The wiper switch works by grounding the wires.

Luke, read my question- "NOT JUST COLORS"! The so called painless kit isn't exactly color coordinated to the original so does anyone know which color the wires represent. And i know there isn't power that goes to the switch but there is a power that goes to the pump/motor (i assume it is the yellow one). Thanks
rwtes Aug 31st, 05, 8:27 AM there is no power to switch only groung take jumper and ground try one then another u dont even need a switch just ground to body and thay will wipe, as 4 colors dbl (thats what manual says) dbl right side of switch b center LBL, under hood, fire wall (left is driver side) on wiper motor u have 5 wires on wiper motor starting from right ( pas. side) DBL,B/DBL&Y,LBL,B/DBL&Y,B last two shuld go to water pump (win wash)hope this helps
vrooom3440 Aug 31st, 05, 4:36 PM Go buy the electric diagrams book, it will have the answers and be well worth the cost.
How or why anybody would try and tackle a Painless harness install without basic background technical information is a mystery to me. This is exactly the problem with generic hot rod harness products: they provide a power wire for the accessory and consider the job done when it has only just begun.
rianbechtold Aug 31st, 05, 6:49 PM OK, see if i can try this again. I know the SWITCH doesn't get power. BUT the motor and pump DOES GET POWER. All i need to know are which terminals GET THE POWER. And again, i have a wiring diagram for the car. It says all the pretty little colors but fails to mention WTH they are! Also, i know how all the systems work, it is the original wiring that screws me! The diagrams show the wires and colors but then just show it go off the page, that is my problem. On the painless, the black wire is the washer pump, the lt blue is speed 1 and the blue/black is speed two. I have run into a few situations where there were say a yellow wire, an orange wire, and a blue wire. In the original wiring the blue was say function wire, orange was a power wire and the yellow was a ground. But in the painless, the blue was the ground, the yellow was the power and the orange was the function. So, there is sometimes a confusion! Thanks
vrooom3440 Aug 31st, 05, 8:41 PM I have had that problem with the *factory* diagram too... I just made a couple of photocopies and taped them together into a bigger page so I could follow the wires off of one side and onto the other.
If I understand, what you are really having trouble with is mapping what wires on the diagram go into what terminals on the wiper motor? So really you want the wiper motor terminal definitions, right?

EXACTLY!! LOL, yea, i shouldn't have put anything in the question about the switch. If someone knows how the whole wiper/washer unit works maybe this will help, sometimes when i'm switching the wires and turn the wipers on, there is a loud click but no movement. Also, is there a way to test if i burnt up the motor? Thanks!
