: CS130 upgrade ?
Since I added the Windstar dual fans, my old alternator struggles a bit at idle to hold 13.5 volts. I see from old posts that I can go to a CS130 alternator?
Questions;
1) I can use the pulley off of my old alternator?
2) I have the brackets in the stock location, but I am using the "March" adjustable brackets. Will these still work on a CS130?
3) Any special wiring changes? I saw the tech article that shows jumpering/removing wires at the old voltage regulator connection, but anythig else special to do?
4) What make/year vehicle do I tell the guy at Autozone I have so I get the correct alternator for a 70 BBC with long water pump?
Thanks!
68chevyed Aug 27th, 05, 6:45 PM 1)yes you can use the same pulley. 2) yes but you have to use a metric bolt for the alt. 3) see upgraded to cs130 still discharging lots of help there, you need to upgrade the power wire from the alt. to 8 gage and the ground wire also to the fender needs to be 8 gage.4) the part number is DL1346-5-11 it is a 105 amp alt. from an 88 olds firenza.You will also have to get a plug for thae alt. you can get it from the bone yard, i paid a buck for mine.

13667 Aug 28th, 05, 1:42 AM Very interesting reading and thanks this will help me as well to say the least. One site that I have found to be informative is MAD Enterprises, they seem to have a lot of info on electrical systems in older cars, installing headlight relays to get higher voltate at the lights, remote sensing, etc.
In the headlanmp relay article they also talk about the importance of where voltage is measured and the effects of headlight and accessory drain on the original wiring harness voltage measuring point. I think some one mentioned that they were measuring voltage at the fuse panel.

Chris R Aug 28th, 05, 6:45 PM Are CS130 alternators available from the aftermarket? I would like to find one with a polished case to go with the rest of my engine compartment.
undee70ss Aug 29th, 05, 5:59 AM Chris, this place and others sell chrome ones, Jim, you can get conversion plugs here

Going to a boneyard today to look for the connector that goes in the back of the alternator and maybe even a good alternator if I can find one. Anybody know of a few "donor cars" that may have this besides the 88 Olds Firenza?
dittoz Sep 2nd, 05, 5:31 PM A 1991 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup may have the right alternator too...

Found one in the boneyard. 1989 Pontiac Grand-Am. It had a CS130 105amp alternator with the correct mounting hole locations. Took that and it's wiring connector for $12.70. SCORE!!
I opted to drill out the upper metric mounting hole and re-tap it for standard thread so I could use my existing March adjustable bracket assembly. Finished up the wiring today, fired it up and have a healthy 14.1 volts at idle. :)
