Can anyone verify that a fan shroud for a '70 big block ( and probably '68-'69 ) doesn't cover the entire radiator? I was at a car show over the weekend and had a nice talk with a guy with a restored '70. His shroud was 3-4" narrower than his radiator. Looked like a small block shroud on a big block radiator to me. He claims that is correct for his car. I have a '72 and the shroud covers the entire width of the radiator. The really odd part is my brother in law noticed it first and he is a Ford guy. After he pointed it out to me it looks quite obvious. I checked my parts book and '70's don't list a big block shroud, only 6 cyl., 8 cyl., 8 cyl. w/AT, 8cyl. w/AC, and 8 cyl. w/4BC. Just curious. Thanks.

The Chevelle BB Fan shroud didn't cover the entire radiator originally.
There were two design & part #'s originally on the assembly line, with a third coming out later on & although subtle differences among all three, they are basically the same measurement, and never covered the entire core area.

Thanks guys. Wonder why they would make a shroud that only covered part of the core? Seems odd to me.

Part no. 6261914 shows as '69 w/396 and '70 8 cyl. w/4BC in my parts book. List price in November '74 was $12.45.

Looking at the location of the shroud versus the location of the fan; it makes perfect sense to me. The shroud has to fit perfectly around the fan with only a certain amount of tolerance; this will allow for the fan to properly pull the air through the radiator. So, covering the rest of the radiator with plastic will only reduce the cooling of the radiator. What strikes me odd is that the fan is off-center from the radiator - at least on big blocks (I don't have any small blocks to look at).

I have a sb 70 Chevelle I just bought with no shroud. Does GM still make them or should I go to year one?

See post above for GM part number.....then go see what your local dealer will charge you. That's where I got mine. Only a few dollars more than gmpartsdirect.com when you factor in their shipping charges.

---EDIT---

Oops....just noticed you said sb. Not absolutely sure about the small block shroud, but I don't think they still offer it.

I have a 70 Chevelle Malibu with a 350ci small block. I have the aluminum radiator from a P30 step van installed it it currently with an electric fan. I am thinking about converting to a clutch fan setup. Can I use the GM 6261914 shroud? Also, what fan and fan clutch should I use?

Thanks!

How many Fan Shroud Mounting Clips are required for the 6261914 fan shroud? Are the clips still available through GM? If so what is the part number?

If anyone has any pictures of how they mount to the shroud and radiator I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Wonder why they would make a shroud that only covered part of the core? Think about what's behind that uncovered area of the radiator. Power steering pump and A/C compressor on vehicles so equiped. They need cooling too.
