: Could Dog Dish Caps Be Correct On A SS
copo guy Aug 25th, 05, 9:28 PM I posted this question in the wheels and tires section. I think I posted it in the wrong place so I will try it here.
I have a 1969 300 SS with a rubber mat and no radio. About 1/2 of the build sheet is missing. Should this car have the Dog Dish Caps or the SS wheels? Could you have the Dog Dish Caps with the SS package IN 1969? If you could have the Dog Dish Caps what wheel would go with that package? XC,XE,YV?
Thanks for any info.
Cam Aug 25th, 05, 11:01 PM Through '68 you could get the dog dish hubcaps on an SS. After '68 they had special wheels; Rally Wheels, Sport Wheels or whatever.
Don_Lightfoot Aug 25th, 05, 11:08 PM That car should have the five spoke SS wheel in 69.
I would appreciate getting some pics of your car and any information you would care to share. I have developed a bit of a library on the 300 Deluxe model owners, at least the Post Coupe Sedans anyway. Is yours a Post Coupe or Hardtop?????
copo guy Aug 26th, 05, 12:57 AM Don I tried to post a few pictures but this option is not available to me, on this sight. I don’t know what other information you would be interested in but I have the POP, part of the build sheet and its Manufacturers Statement Of origin. If you want anything please let me know and I will be glad to take a picture and post it. This car is on episode 4 of Dream Car Garage this season. The reason I asked about the Dog Dish Hub Caps is because the car is radio delete with a rubber mat. Very base car except for the SS package which I understand you had to order to get the 375hp motor. The original owner was Frederick M. Engle of Raytown, MO. I have not been able to reach him to ask him any detailed questions about the car. Thanks again for any help.
Don_Lightfoot Aug 26th, 05, 10:30 AM All the 300 Deluxe models got the rubber flooring, carpet was not available. There were a lot of other unique items in relation to the Malibus. If you haven't done so yet, check out my website below for some of the comparisons between the two models.
By all means email me a few pictures, my address is in my profile here and on my website as well. Also include your full name and where you are located if you don't mind. Don't worry about sending anything regarding documentation.
Do you know when that Episode 4 will be aired?
71elkySS454 Aug 26th, 05, 10:45 PM I am by no means an expert on these cars, and this has been a long, long time ago; but a friend of mine bought a new 1969 SS that was a very weird bird. He bought it new at our local dealership, a very small Chevy dealer in a very small rural town. I remember it from the day he brought it home. It was a solid black POST car with a 3 speed trans. It came home from the dealership with small hubcaps. Now, I did not see the car at the dealership, so I don't know if they maybe swapped the wheels out before he brought it home. Some of you are claiming it should have had the SS wheels. Maybe it came to the dealership that way, all I am saying is that it was delivered to him with the poverty caps. I don't remeber seeing any 'Malibu' vs '300' script on the car anywhere. Back then we didn't know or care about the difference. It did have the SS on the front fenders. What we did find odd was that it was a post car, and it was a floor shift 3 speed. And man was it fast! Was it a 375 car? I cannot swear if it was a solid lifter car of not, I do remember that it was a lot faster than the normal SS396 cars running around. It was a bench seat car, it did have an AM radio, and I can't remember if it had carpet or not. I have fond memories of this car, as he was a good friend of mine and the car was just so fast!
copo guy Aug 27th, 05, 12:15 AM It is really nice when certain things bring us back to our youth. Thank you for your impute. Anyone else?
Mr69 Aug 27th, 05, 1:24 AM I think that if you asked for a different wheel, the dealer would accomodate you any way they can.
I have heard of Rally wheels coming on some 69 SS Chevelles, but installed at the dealer before the buyer takes delivery.
As far as coming from the factory, I think the standard wheel would be the SS wheel, and then if you wanted a different wheel, you could specify which, possibly at extra cost.
I have never seen a 69 SS Chevelle with the dog dish hubcaps, but I believe that it's the way many COPO cars were delivered.
I'd say that the correct 14 x 7 non SS wheel would be an XT code.
This wheel accepts the dog dish cap.

ohhawk Aug 27th, 05, 9:14 AM One source book I have says.........
All '69 SS 396s came with only one type of wheel. Commonly referred to as an SS wheel or Sports wheel, it was listed as part #3956744 and stamped JJ. No wheel option was available with the SS 396, although Rally wheels were available on the Chevelle line, they would be incorrect for the SS 396. Chevelles designated as COPO cars were available with the 15x7 in. Rally wheels. The replacement part # is listed as 3997899 and the wheel is stamped DZ. The center hub was the same as that used with Rally wheels in 1968.
Don_Lightfoot Aug 28th, 05, 5:31 PM Here is a picture of "copoguy's" new acquisition. Gee, it happens to be a Lemans Blue Post Car :hurray: and may be familiar to a lot of members on here.

COPO's also got the SS wheel unless the sports car conversion was ordered then they recieved the rally wheel. It was the COPO Camaros that got the "XT" steel rim with the dog dish cap. My COPO has the YA wheel specified on the build sheet.
