I just picked up a 68 Malibu. I have a few questions so bear with me.
1) I need the peice between the tail lights and I do not know the name for it.
2) What are some good web sites for parts?
3) Driving the car home the steering was very sloppy with alot of play, what is the best fix ?
4) My 68 has the original 327, What will hold the value better, fixing the car to the original malibu or a SS clone ?

This question would be best answered in the suspension forum. But, I'd start by checking out all of the steering components. Like the center link, pitman arm, tierod ends, rag joint, etc, for play.

1. I call it the "rear panel" or "tail light panel"
2. Ground up is good. Also Year one.
3. It's probably an accumulation of wear on all the front end parts. A complete front end rebuild is almost mandatory for any of these old cars to feel right again. You will need to get on your back under the car with someone turning the steering wheel back and forth and feel the slop in each steering joint/connection. You will see if you have something almost ready to fail or if it is a little slop in every joint.
4. Original or clone, tough call. First thing you need to do is build it right for you along with reliability and these days a little gas mileage wouldn't hurt either. Save the big block for when gas gets cheap again!! 8^)

the steering problem ..... there is a large nut on top of the steering box. you should be able to adjust it but i dont have the procedure memorized and my book is at school... but there is an adjustment to take the slop out..
i dealt with NPD parts and was very happy with my parts that i bought thrugh them..
and i would leave it as original as possible.. in my opinion keep the apples as apples and the pears as pears.. im not too fond of all the clones..

I never thought of clones as fruit salad before, but I like the idea!
