When I release the clutch from a stop and take off I am getting about 3 loud and quick thumps coming from what sounds like the tranny hump area? Is this a sign of bad u-joints?

sounds more like a bad trans mount

A second vote for the transmission mount. Just get under it and look, it will be pretty obvious if you try to lift it.

yeah, I have no vibrations at speed. Where do I go for a new mount?

Any parts store should have it on the shelf, or at least be able to get it for you.
