: Insruance Quote... PPG/ SpizeHecker?
feedphillipnow Aug 24th, 05, 8:24 PM Why does it seem alot of shops are "phasing out PPG" Ive heard this from numerous places. One shop said they use a new "high end" paint called Spizehecker (spell check) Some German brand. I need a quote for this guys insurance company that hit me, I want a quote with high quality $$ paint, because thats what I used, then again it doesnt look like it exactly... but eh :) Your thoughts?
TechNova Aug 24th, 05, 9:59 PM There isn't any "phasing out " going on around here.
There is no reason PPG will not perform as well or better than Speis Hecker.
If you are trying to match some of the high dollar European metallics the shop would have to step up to PPG Global.
Sometimes shops change due to a "percieved" quality difference, basically they got sold on it.
An aggressive Spies rep in an area with a laid back PPG rep can make big changes.
There has also been alot of financial incentives for a shop to switch. Some shop managers sure don't mind a few gratuities from a rep to switch a shop over.
I have never heard of an insurance allowing any price difference based on the brand of paint used. They barely cover their paint costs as it is.

I just noticed where you are from.
It's possible that due to the strict regs. in CA. that there is a VOC
issue that PPG isn't meeting and Spies is.
It's unlikely because PPG usually stays on top of it but CA. rules change alot.
feedphillipnow Aug 29th, 05, 6:09 PM Well I found a good quality shop that would paint and repair my car. The cost is $1500 to "blend" or paint match the rear ds quarter and take out the dent. A cheapie shop said $1050, which is what the insurance company sent me a check for. But I said no way. I still dont like the idea of matching paint. Also, in reality... I will be taking out the dent myself and touching up the paint. I'll get it painted again someday.... Theres a high quality shop here but they are VERY busy, his rough estimate said it could be anywhere up to $2500-$3500... I want HIS quote... the guy that hit me and the insurance company are dicks... Ive spent so much time and money driving around town trying to get quotes.... loss time and work, and my poor neck!
Quick question...
If and when they send me the check for repairs, is medical/ loss wages/ misc. on a seperate claim?

You don't have to get the quotes, you only need one and you can make them send someone to you. They are at fault, they do the running work.
The med should be seperate but be careful, I've heard of a few instances where when the repair check is cashed it constitutes a final settlement for everything. I settled my med seperatly from the repair (for a whopping $1K)
My sister's car was hit by another car and she did not settle the med. in case her infant daughter developed neck or back problems later. That was 9 years ago, she could still claim on her daughter.
Read the fine print thoroughly on evrything you sign or cash.
MARTINSR Aug 30th, 05, 1:06 PM What is the difference between a "dent" and a "ding", whos responsable for it!
"Phasing out" is a great way for the shop to say "changing paints". Would they want to say "oh, we got a better deal on this paint" or something like that?
It sounds good to the customer, "We are now offering a BETTER paint".
It could be that an market could have a new rep from a competing brand is kicking some butt in the area and switching everyone over.

feedphillipnow Aug 30th, 05, 4:17 PM They had a appraiser come out but it was for super cheap, well atleast it seemed so. Ive only found 2 shops that will touch old cars, everyone says no more old cars! But they sent me a check for $1050 give or take a few cents. Macco would probably be the only place to touch it for that price, and i wouldnt want to use them. But, as for the 2 shops that would repair it, one place called S&S Thomsons Collision Repair (here in sacramento) would repair the dent and paint the area and probably stop around the rear window and blend it together. It was tricky getting an accurate quote from them because i used some pricey PPG, but it came out not so great and I still have alot of orange peel to take care of, they quoted me $1559. As for the second shop his quick estimate was $2500 area and he wouldnt be able to match the paint. Repair and repaint, I dont have this guys estimate in writting, hes very busy and hasnt returned my call! So maybe I'll just be getting $1559.... enough rambling.

Since PPG is the big dog in the automotive coatings & resins market,I doubt this is the case. Their stuff is as good as anybodies and better than most.
