Yes they could.

But they couldn't get it :)

Only the SS cars had big blocks in 68 as far as I know.

1970 was the first year you could order and get a malibu/convertible/bench seat/big block car (with a LS3 big block).

unless in 69 you ordered a copo car.

No FACTORY BB Malibus in 1968. In 1968 the BB was only available in the Chevelle or El Camino as an SS396 model denoted by the 8 in the third spot of the VIN (13837BXXXXX etc)

Also bucket seats are NOT an SS item on chevelles. It was an option available on all models. My first 68 SS396 was a bench 4 spd, manual drum brakes and no power steering car.

unless in 69 you ordered a copo car.

But then that wouldn't be a 68 Malibu.

Now you're just being picky Dean. :D

In '68 & '69 you COULD get a 325 horse 396 in a non-SS Malibu or 300 Deluxe, but ONLY if it was ordered as a 4-door sedan Police Car (RPO B02).

The '69 COPO was actually ordered as though it was a Z25 SS396 with an L78, then the COPO was specified (it simply looked like a lack of SS badging on the car, and even lacked the 'Turbo-Jet 427' decals under the hood). Now we know in hindsight what COPO 9562 was all about...

He said convertible.... What about a Canadian Chevelle? Couldn't you get a Malibu BB? Or was that just in earlier years (ie. 66-67)?

Hmmmm....didn't the 69 COPO's have Malibu on the dash trim above the glove box? Don't think it said SS396, did it? What about the door panels....Malibu? :)

Copo's are all Malibu inside..dash & door panels.
