Hi - we have a problem with a "new" (to us) 72 Chevelle. The wiper arm will not stay attached to the motor on the firewall. When the motor is engaged, the arm goes down towards the bottom of it's travel, and then it pops off. We have tried tightening the 2 screws down but that appears to make no difference.

We have the assembly manual but it is of course not clear "Install arm to motor and tighten screws". Right - then what??

Are the little brass pieces replaceable and does that make any difference.

I had the same problem for quite a while on my 71. Eventually I just bent the pieces around the ball (where it kept popping off), close the hole little. Haven't had a problem ever since.

If you take the "sandwich" assembly apart, you will find two pieces of copper in the shape of the ball on the motor shaft. These usually wear out through the years allowing the arm to "pop off" the ball. These are available, believe it or not, in the "HELP" area of your local auto parts store. Relube the ball with lithium grease, replace the copper inserts and you're good to go!
Been there, done that, many times over the last 33 years! ;)
