chevelle has a bench seat and powerglide right now. within 2 weeks, ill have a turbo350 in it, and im wondering about the shifter. it has a column shifter, and i dont think ill be able to shift into 1st, correct? (that or park). and im wondering about a floor shifter, ive found a couple im interested in. down the road i plan on bucket seats and a console. will cutting a hole for a shifter mess this up? will a floor shifter even fit? the column shifter will work until i can afford a floor shifter or other alternative, right?

Hey i just did this swap in my 68 chevelle. I replaced a tired 307 and two speed with a zz4 and a turbo 350 out of a 72 malibu. You have three basic options. Option 1, go onto shiftworks.com and buy their shift kit for your conversion about $50.00. Second option your standard column shifter WILL WORK, that is what I am running right now. All you need to do is find someone that is technically skilled to adjust the shifter rod near the transmission. I myself had a friend that knew how to do it, so I cannot exactly tell how to do it, but it only took him about three adjustments and five minutes to get it right(this is free). lastly you can go with a nice floor shifter, which is probably what you are going to end up doing in the future anyway...

i was looking at a b&m quick silver shifter, it has a decently large base, i was wondering if that will fit on the hump in the middle. am i going to be able to use a shifter like this? also does this shifter go P R N D then rotate back to 2 and 1?

I've got a B&M Megashifter on the the transmission tunnel in my 67. It fits very well. I took my time carving the radius into the plastic cover than fits over the shifter to make it match the shape of the floor. Because they are cable shifted, it's very easy to position them where ever you want.

I have a bench seat and I mounted the shifter far enough forward that I can move the seat up nearly all the way. I mounted my shifter straight to the floor and cut my carpet to fit around it. With buckets, it would be an easy matter to move the shifter back a bit later if you wanted to. But if you do this, you probably want to mount it on top the carpet so that you'll only have to deal with hiding a few small screw holes rather than a big cut out. You could also position it further back and give up your bench seat travel.

I haven't played with a Quicksilver in several years (I put one in a 72 Cutlass for a guy once), but if I recall correctly from drive you can drop it in 2 or 1 and then ratchet back to D.
