: 70-72 Convert. Goodmark 1/4?

Thinking of buying a pair of full 1/4 panels for my 70 convertible. Has anybody installed these on their 70-72 convertible yet? Any fitting problems? Are they exactly the same as GM Originals?

I am an experienced bodyman and have had some trouble fitting some of the so called after market full 1/4 panels, especially on Camaros.

Thanks, musclecarkid

Anybody use full 70-72 convertible quarter panels?

I didn't think quarters were available for 70-72 convertables. If you don't mind, what's the pricing, and let us know how well they work.

Thanks!

They are available from most Chevelle parts suppliers that sell Goodmark Sheetmetal. List price around $650 each. Just wondering how well they fit, any problem areas?

Goodmark is using the original GM tooling to stamp the full quarters. I have set for my 71 and they look good. I haven't to the point of hanging them yet, so I can't tell you how they fit.

First, I just want to say that I am not saying Goodmark or any other reproduction companies make a bad product etc. Personally I only use all original or NOS parts. Although you may pay more, it guarentees the best possible quality and the best fit as well as long lasting and durable. Hope this helps.

I used goodmark full quarters on my '71 convertible. The body shop installed them. They told me that they fit perfectly. I'm pretty happy with the results. Good luck

I just got my 71 back from my bodyman, and he was amazed how well the full 1/4s fit. I was there to help test fit and it was the greatest feeling seeing the sail panel fit right up under the roof line and have everything match up great! I also replaced the outer wheelhousing and there were no problems with it. I just received the pics back and will be posting soon. Oh yea they were Goodmarks and everything I have read here is true about them. The only difference from orginal is the thickness.

All Ill say is if the convert panels are as good as the coupe quarters then you will be very happy. The only thing diff is the slight metal thickness, my goodmark's measured one gauge lighter then some NOS quarters that I have.

One problem area that I found on both sides is the upper front of the door jam. Right where the quarter glass and window glass would meet the bend on the jam is not 100% right. I had to make roughly a small 1-2" relief cut and rework the metal in that bend with a hammer and dolly. I had about 1hr per side in that mod from the first cut til I shut off the welder.

You'll be very happy with the goodmark panels...Eric

Was that slight modification to the forward door jam on a hardtop Goodmark 1/4 panel?

Has anyone found this problem on 70-72 Goodmark Convertible 1/4 panels?

Also when using hardtop outer wheel housings on a convertible, how much of the wheel housng can be used? I know that the convertible outers are different. I'm guessing I'll have to cut and replace the outer 2-3 inches of the outer wheel housing.

While the 1/4 panels are off, I'm also going to replace the rear body panel.
Mine is rusted where the panel meets the 1/4's and in the rear trunk gutter.

I see the rear body panels are available now for around $135 so I'll try one out. Has anyone used one of these panels yet?

Thanks for all the replies, Kevin (musclecarkid)

i put those on my 70 conv fit awesome except in the the same place eris is talking about only on the driver side left a 1/16 inch wider gap on the top of the door jam line the only person to notice it was me other than that they easy to hang and fit perfect highly recommend them sure NOS is great but can you get them its not worth the hassle looking for them the goodmarks fit well

Ive only installed the coupe(hardtop) quarters, never convert.

Have not used a repro tail panel but replaced one before. Stating from been then done that, BEFORE you make any welds check ALL gaps. Check on the deck lid, the rear bumper. That tail panel affects the whole alginment on that car. If you dont have it in right nothing will fit.

It might even be easier to splice in that rusted area with new metal instead of using the entire new repro panel. Buy the new panel but splice it where the rust is, leaving the majority of old tail panel in place.

Another note on that panel DONT HAVE BOTH QUARTERS OFF. Leave one quarter in place as it will aid you in finding the correct angles that panel sits at. If you dont you will spend many hours playing with each part trying to find how it was located to get all the proper gaps. Once you find the right angles tack weld it in place or screw it down. Only once both quarters are installed and welded then weld in that panel for good.

As for finding NOS convert quarters... GOODLUCK Ive only seen one, which was on Ebay sold for around 2000

Thanks to "sevt chevelle" and all who replied. Good advice. Now I know the Goodmark 1/4 Panels are the best available. I have seen NOS 70-72 convertibe panels about 10 years ago, and they were $3000 a pair then. No need to spend that much, when the money saved can go somewhere else in the restoration.
