I have a chance to get my hands on this 70-72 SS idiot light style dash, I would have allready jumped on it but i dont know how workable this thing is.
I dont know if these holes can be repaired or not.

I just recieved a few pics and would like to share them with you to get a few opinions.

Honestly it looks pretty messed up to me. I had a few holes in my 68 dash, much less noticable then that and they were not to easy to fill and not notice. With those 70's dashes they are even more plastic and if they are at all like mine extremely fragile when they get old. Anyway if it were me i would pass and you didn't even state the price.

What do you wanna do with it? I don't see the "holes", just a lot of worn off chrome rings and idiot light circles. You thinking about putting guages behind the circles?

You could check out Covan's Classics for basic plastic.

Yea I would be putting guages behind there, the asking price on it is $85.
You can see the holes in the last pic, on the right of the idiot lights, and 2 more between the radio cutout and the lighter cutout.

Hmm... I swear when I looked the first time there was only one picture...

Got any cup holders you wanna mount? :)

I probably would not pay $85 for it with the holes myself.

I would be interested in it if you don't want it.

I'd snag it for $85! The gauge cluster is worth that alone. The hole's don't look too bad. The radio towers are nice. They are usually hacked.

If it wasnt for those holes I would have snatched that thing up allready, but I really dont want holes like that in my dash, and the underside looks kinda iffy even though that will rarely be seen.

It is about 150 miles away from me and I want to make sure I want it before I take a trip out there.

Does anyone know what can be done about those holes?
Can you replaec those lights with the factory guages?
The chrome I was just reading about in a previous post, someone had made a nice pdf about what to do to "rechrome" those things, so that part im not too concerned about.

The way you can repair the holes is use a plastic repair kit with a vinyl repair kit. The vinyl repair kit will have assorted textures, you choose the correct texture that matches the dash and make the impressions after filling the holes with the plastic repair.

I'd like to buy it if you don't want it.

Just email me.

That dash is worth $85.00. The radio towers are nice, the cluster looks good, and the holes are small enough to fill with plastic epoxy. With some time and patience, you can make that dash look new with little investment.

Ok ive been convinced :D, now i just gotta convince someone to let me borrow their car for the 150 mile drive out there, cuz currently I dont trust the velle to make it, well that and gas .
I wonder if it will cost less to just have the item shipped, as opposed to spending all that cash on gas.

Do not have it shipped unless you know it is going to be packaged well. I have had 2 dashed shipped and they both where damaged. Mainly from the cluster busting off mounts. IF you do have it shipped, request that the cluster is removed and carefully cushioned.

I agree.
Or get a Monte woodgrain insert and paint it with black wrinkle paint and use that to cover over the holes

Send it to www.cvvacuumplaters.com

they can restore the plastic and rechrome. My 68 dash cost me $300.
So this one might be more..

I really hope you bought that dash. That's in pretty great shape for the money. On Ebay you would not even touch that dash for less that 150.00, and likely would not have included gauges.

Just picked it up and leme tell ya it really does look better in person.
The holes i see now are very workable.
The only other problem is the bottom has a couple scrapes and the lighter hole is wallowed out a bit.
I think i can fix these things easily though.
When i gave him the money he also threw in the center section of a steering wheel.
Although now that i look at it dosnt appear to be from a chevelle.
*edit* nope definately from a 73-74 nova *edit*

I have only had my 70 El Camino for about 3 weeks now. the first thing I did was pull the dash to fix wiring problems. It has the sweep dash in it and it is wore down a bit, I want to put a SS dash in it but if I buy all the parts new I will have more in the dash than I bought the car for. Will a SS dash increase the value of the car as much as the parts are worth?

Who knows, down the road anything is possible.
I think it was posted earlier that to buy everything new would cost $1900+
Im pretty sure it will add to the value but 2 grand is quite a bit.
You may have more luck looking in swap meets and classifieds for parts that may needs some work, then just fixing it up yourself, save tons of money.
Im planing on this dast all together costing me arround $750 not including the wiring harness.
That price would be all the supplies and paint to finish the dash right, a couple of guages to replace the idiot lights, a radio rebuild, and new heater control cables.
Im fairly confident that if i keep a discerning eye on swap meets and perhaps e-bay I should be able to stay within my budget.

I would love to stalk these swapmeets but my biggest problem is knowing when/where they are.
Is there a central place i can go to find out about swap meets?

Whatever you decide, order a new printed circuit ($70-80) from
Year One or OPG and replace it while it's apart. On my '72 ElC
someone switched to a used SS dash but left the old printed
circuit which is brittle and causes all kinds of electrical "gremlins".

Forgot to mention, google "classic car swap meets" and your state
and you should find lots of info. Here in Seattle area every year I print out a schedule of all car shows and swap meets that the Corvette & Muscle Car
Club puts out. Also try the online calendar of events for local fairgrounds and drive-in theaters, and try http://www.carshownews.com/
