: th400 no reverse
Milan Aug 22nd, 05, 9:05 PM Hello all,
I have a question. I was at the track and had a few misshaps and then I lost reverse! Here is what happened.
As I was in the lane waiting to stage I realized my coolant temp gauge was rising I pulled off to the side. The gauge was at 230-240. I found a blow fuse for the water pump. I replaced the fuse cooled everything down pulled into the lanes again. When I got up to the burnout box my wife backed me. After I did my burn out I realized I was in reverse!!!!!! I staged my car and made my pass. Things went fine. After reviewing my pass and taking a few notes I wennt to make another pass. when I pulled onto the track and and tried to back into the water, NOTHING, the car felt like the brakes were on. Like it was in drive and reverse at the same time. Well I put it in drive and drove back to the pits fine. Let it cool and tried reverse again... same thing.
Is It possible that the overheat or the reverse burnout fried something? Or should I look into the valve body?
Its my 67 Camaro with a 454 with a th400 and a 4000 stall. I did the Trans Go stage 3 shift kit. other than that there are no mods with the trans. I run 18" wide slicks.
Thanks in advance

jakeshoe Aug 22nd, 05, 11:27 PM reverse burnout huh? :)
OK,
Well,
To have reverse you use the direct clutches, but if you still have a 3rd gear you didn't hurt..
You also use the low sprag and the low band....You may have hurt the sprag, which is usually actually a roller clutch.
Band could be burned..
See if you have engine braking when you downshift from 2nd to 1st...
If the sprag was hurt you shouldn't have auto low, but you won't know with the manual setup. Take the governor weight "keeper" off to test this.
Most likely its' coming out...
jakeshoe Aug 22nd, 05, 11:30 PM Actually,
Went back and re-read your post... You fried the forward clutches together by "driving through" them doing the reverse burnout. You probably had a pretty tight forward pack stackup (which is OK...unless doing high speed reverse manuevers :) )
That is why it feels like a transbrake in reverse. You will also have low gear in neutral, and park will also feel like a transbrake...
jakeshoe Aug 22nd, 05, 11:32 PM And you will notice, that even though I ragged on ya for the reverse burnout, I'm pretty familiar with the symptoms ;)
Milan Aug 23rd, 05, 8:11 AM Thanks Jacob, couldn't you have told me it probably a metal shaving stuck in the 2-3 shift valve from drilling out the trans go plate??? (wishfull thinking huh) As always thanks for your advice.

Milan Aug 23rd, 05, 12:59 PM Jacob looking at my notes....Neutral behaves normal as does park??? I have not driven it to see if it shifts from 1-2 or just 1-3
ps I was laughing in my helmet...what a goofball I must have looked like when I tried to roll out of the water box in Reverse!!!!! (quick shift to 1st and look around if anyone noticed) the started was giggling so he and the tower were in on it!!!!

jakeshoe Aug 23rd, 05, 1:49 PM Go drive it again and see if neutral acts as low gear. Also verify all the forward gears. And if possible return gov to stock and verify forward gears in auto mode.
Milan Aug 24th, 05, 12:34 PM Jacob, It is on the trailer for a while. I am positive Nuetral is neutral. The governor is untampered with. I still have the auto feature. I will probably drop the pan and hope to find something in the 2-3 shift valve. That is one of the suggestions in the book I purchased. any thoughts about that?( Thanks again)

jakeshoe Aug 24th, 05, 12:39 PM Not sure how the 2-3 shift valve would affect reverse, the manual valve lines up pump oil with reverse... So the 2-3 valve shouldn't be involved..I would have to look at a valve body and case to be sure.
I'll try to remember to look at a troubleshooting manual today.
Milan Aug 24th, 05, 3:06 PM I was hoping(read wishing) the 2-3 valve had not returned (due to debris) and that was allowing reverse oil to bleed off and activate some forward components??? creating the transbreak effect and not effecting nuetral or 1st gear (auto or manual)?
Milan
jakeshoe Aug 24th, 05, 8:00 PM I understand but I don't recall reverse oil going through the 2-3 valve.
I forgot to lok at my manual today but I will grab it in a few, gotta run to town, my boy split his toe, so gotta go pay the emergency room bill :(

Milan Sep 16th, 05, 10:28 AM To update.
The forward clutches were in fact burnt and welded together. I replaced the frictions and steels as well as the release springs. I drilled a .0625 hole where the transgo kit suggested inside the front pump and installed the new spring in the pressure regulator since the trans was apart. I am also adding a second cooler since I have no trans cooler in my radiator. I was running a single finned aluminum brick style one and I dont think that was enough. I will add one of those auxiliary cooler in front of the radiator as well. I hope to install the trans tonight. I will update with how it turned out.
