: Another Barn Find, 66 Chevelle, Very Sad
Sgtpop Aug 22nd, 05, 6:53 PM An employee at work told me about his brother in law who has a 66 Chevelle. I ask if we could go look at it sometime. Well the other day he called and told me to meet him. On the way he told me that the car was not for sale. His brother-in-law bought the Chevelle when he was 17. He is now 37. The Chevelle was parked in a field approx. 4 yrs ago and was left. Well I figured that it would be a hoax. I could not believe what I found. The car is a 66 Chevelle, which appears to be intact. As I looked at it sitting there rotting away. Its got the POP, and all original paperwork. Its a 2 owner car. I have tried to buy this car but the owner said no. He said that one day he would fix it up. He took the back seat out and has it in the garage. The rest is there. What do you guys think. Mike Crown, check these pictures out. The mileage is at 49000. The car had 27000 when he bought it from the first owners. I am trying to talk this guy into selling, but so far nothing. Also if you look real close at the top left front there is a 1972 Camaro covered by the weeds. We could not get to it due to the snakes.

Stikman33 Aug 22nd, 05, 7:02 PM Ouch, very sad. An original 66 SS 396 :( Cant be to many of those still sitting around. I understand not wanting to get rid of your childhood and all, but cummon people, let it go!

MikeJ Aug 22nd, 05, 7:11 PM Well
Some of us also say we're gonna fix em up one day but never do it so nothing new there
You might want to bring some cash out there with you if you go again - he may not realize how much it's worth or if he is might be persuaded by the sight of the cash
Sid Coleman Aug 22nd, 05, 7:16 PM I'd take the approach of 'wouldnd't you like to see her restored to all her glory instead of wasting away to a rust pile'? Dang shame
Alwhite00 Aug 22nd, 05, 7:55 PM At least put the freakin thing inside. Go to carsinbarns.com for about 1,000 pictures like that, Same story on most of them "going to fix it up" but there are also some rescue stories.

RacnJsn95 Aug 22nd, 05, 8:41 PM Yeah, tell him if he's not going to sell it to at least get a roof over it! Man, what a waste of good car! I'd keep trying to get it from him.
snydes Aug 22nd, 05, 8:57 PM By the time he gets around to fixing it up he's going to need a metal detector to find it. If you have a good idea of the condition and value, make him an offer, best to be cash like MikeJ said for the shock value. Make it high enought to captivate him but low enough to make it worthwhile, a "magic number".
I was in a similar situation with my '67, took me over a year till the previous owner decided to sell.
EddieC67ss Aug 22nd, 05, 10:19 PM A real shame.
SSx3 Aug 22nd, 05, 10:32 PM Pulling a wad of hundred's out of your pocket is a huge motivator in a situation such as yours, "50" of them should be sufficient. Ya know what they say "money talks, BS walks". Good luck.

So what's the difference between hanging on this way and those who want to be buried in their Chevelle?

EXACTLY! You can't lowball people like this. If you want that car- be prepared to offer real money for it.
A Better approach might be to offer to "help them" get it going... pull it out of the weeks and help them clean it up.
Once they see the condition that it has deteriorated to (i'm sure sitting in the weeds for several years has deteriorated it more than they think) they might be more willing to sell it to you...
and at least then it will be out of the weeds!
Professor_SS Aug 22nd, 05, 11:40 PM I know where there is a early Shelby cobra 350 mustang in the same condition and situation. Been trying to buy it for at least 15 years, the guy is in a wheel chair now but still won't let loose of it, he bought it new, when he passed the bar. He has gone from "I'm going to" to "going to have it restored one day"

Whoa!!! 500 of 'em!?! This thing must be in Craig Jackson's back yard!
CheZeppelinCorps Aug 23rd, 05, 1:15 AM There should be a law against this. Cruelty to beautiful and rare cars. 5 years in prison.

LOL :D Oops! I fat fingered an extra "0" it should read as "50"
Chris R Aug 23rd, 05, 2:16 AM No matter what the excuse is. If people say they are going to fix a car someday then do it. What are you waiting for? It kills me how many times I hear that. I know a guy well into his 70's that has 4 highly desireable classic Fords that I would like to get my hands on. A 1950's Retractable, 57 T Bird with Porthole window hardtop, 64 Mustang Convert, And a complete all steel 1939 Convertable sitting since 1967. I would gladly take any of them in a heartbeat. Is has actually worked on the Retractable the last few years but its not restored or even close to it. Thankfully, he respects them and they have been inside for several years I have known about them.
He claims he is going to restore them all someday. Yea right. Did I mention he is well into his 70's?
mr 4 speed Aug 23rd, 05, 8:11 AM Too bad
The time to rescue that car is now...
WestyJ69chevelle Aug 23rd, 05, 8:32 AM going to fix it up someday.. yeah right.. thanks for letting another one rot into the ground buddy...
Thad Aug 23rd, 05, 9:35 AM Ask him if he's looked at the car lately.
Local yahoo had a 66 malibu, he was "gonna fix up some day" each year it sank a little deeper into the ground.
He eventually sold it for 1,500 to a guy who was restoring a 66 SS-396 and needed some hard to find bits.
But the Mali itself was too far gone by then and was parted out.
This guy might be doing you a favor not selling it.
Could be too far gone already.
Good Luck.
Edit: Just checked out your showroom, if you think you can save it, I hope you do.
malibu400 Aug 23rd, 05, 11:59 AM So what's the difference between hanging on this way and those who want to be buried in their Chevelle?
We don't have to watch the ones that are buried rot into the ground
dadeo-3 Aug 23rd, 05, 1:26 PM I do not know why, but I am more drawn to rusting heaps than I am to fully restored cars. I do not understand the alure, but I can not deny it. In retrospect of all my project cars over the years, I would have been money ahead to walk away from most of the derelect, and neglected heaps; Save my money and buy one that was already re-done.
I busy draining my bank account on one right now that I just should have left in the field it was rotting in.......but could not resist buying it.
Then, I see these pictures posted of this 66 396 SS and think to myself "man, I wish I had that one".
WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH ME??????
sneal46 Aug 23rd, 05, 2:00 PM If there is any "up" side to a situation like this... its that it makes all the cars just like it out there that much more valuable. BUT... it sure is sad to see a classic waste away like that. It almost makes you want to go steal it for its own good.
rj57 Aug 23rd, 05, 2:07 PM Sad to see a car like this just setting, rusting away.
I personally do not own a Chevelle but I've always liked them.
Many times I've seen cars such as this just set and rust into nothing that the owner will not sell.
"I understand not wanting to get rid of your childhood and all, but cummon people, let it go!"
I happen to be one of these very people. I still own my very first car. It's been mine since July, 1972. Unfortunately in 1987 I tore it apart intending to do a body off, lost my job, could not find steady work for over 10 years.
The car is still setting in a corner of my barn in 2,000 pieces.
And since I own other cars getting back to my "First" car hasn't been possible. Plus the '49 Dodge truck my father owns is setting in the way. Meaning no room to work.
