Does anyone know how to remove the dash on a 72 chevelle SS (with gauge package)or how to replace the drivers side vent? I started to remove it and could not find the last couple of screws behind the gauges.
Thanks
Joe

First remove the dash pad. There are 6 or 7 screws in the front of the pad. Remove those and pad will come off. The back of pad is held on by clips. I would the remove the steering column or at least lower the column by removing 2 bolts holding it to support that is part of firewall. There are then 6 or 7 bolts which hold the entire dash assemlby to the fire wall. Remove those and lower entire assembly. If you want to take it out of the car, you must disconnect fuse block from firewall. There are several other connections...speedo cable, heater controls etc. You can probably replace a vent by just lowering the entire assembly. I removed my entire assemlby a few weeks ago, it is not that bad.

If you have a column shifter, make sure you disconnect the shift indicator before lowering that steering column...

My brother in law and I last year removed the entire dash, replaced the tac and clock, and reinstalled in less than 4 hours in my 71 Chevelle SS 454. I was really intimidated by the chore but it was easier than I thought it would be. The fact that my brother in law is pretty good at working on cars too didn't hurt! If you have a service manual for your car it details the job too. There was a magazine article last year that detailed r/r the dash too which I think went into better detail than the service manual. If you haven't done this yet, maybe I could copy those pages for you and send them to you!
