: 1970 front Stereo speaker rebuilding ???
Mr69 Aug 21st, 05, 3:28 AM Working on a 1970 El Camino with dual speaker dash. (stereo).
Does anyone know who rebuilds the 2 original dash speakers ?
I bought a pair of the Custom Auto Sound replacements, but the drivers side absolutely will not fit. The magnet hits the gauge cluster.
Is anyone making replacement speakers that fit this aplication ?
I notice on the original 4 x 6 speakers that the magnets are positioned differently so they will clear the gauges.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

snydes Aug 21st, 05, 10:35 AM I heard from others that Jackson Speaker Service does good work on restoring original speakers. Here is the number I found... (517) 789-6400.
I'm going to be sending them a speaker soon myself.
Birddog1970 Aug 21st, 05, 10:56 AM Nate -- I had 2 original front speakers on my 70 chevelle rebuilt. Year One (they have the info on their web site) does a great job and it takes about 4-6 weeks. You can get good cores on ebay. They sound good -- well as good as they did in 1970.
If you want aftermarket that will fit .. just about all the restoration companies make speakers that will fit.
Are you using the original radio? If so you have to use a 8-10 ohm speaker or you'll mess up the original radio.
1BadBu Aug 21st, 05, 11:34 AM Neal's Speaker Service. (916)363-6524 Did a great job on a pair of CerwinVega 12's for only $60. My cones were good so he only replaced the edges. An honest guy doing good work, what a concept...
zrwhat Aug 21st, 05, 11:46 AM SS396,
I have 2 front speakers that are on their way back to me that Jackson Speaker Service reconed for me, they are fast and reasonable, mine have been gone for 2 weeks and should be here Monday or Tuesday, cost me $85.00 and that covers shipping back to me. I can voulch for their work as I had 4 other speakers done about 5 years ago by Jackson and I was very happy with the end result, you couldn't tell them from NOS, they also restored my Delco am/fm stereo factory 70 radio and that turned out great as well. There's a guy on ebay with a set of NOS 70 rear 6x9 speakers and he has a "buy it now" price of $1000.00!, find a junk set and send them out and have them reconed for about 1/8th the cost of NOS, for all 4, anyway once they are installed, who is going to see them?
Ron McGee is the point of contact at Jackson (517) 789-6400.
Hope this helps,
Gibby

WHY ?
1badss396 Aug 24th, 05, 11:55 AM The speakers?WHY ?
Mr69 Aug 28th, 05, 9:27 PM I already have the original dash speakers.
Besides that, I've inquired about buying parts from you and you don't return emails.
I think you just enjoy saying "look what I've got".

rook1957 Aug 30th, 05, 11:48 PM Hi Nate,
How much of a clearance problem did you have, The reason I asked is I modified my speaker brackets to work with some new speakers. I have a sweeping dash and I have not checked to see if they will clear that yet!
Phil
Mr69 Aug 31st, 05, 2:13 AM I had installed the round gauge dash and removed the factory speaker brackets.
Then I attempted to install the aftermarket speakers. The right side has plenty of room, but on the drivers side, the round magnet hits the gauges.
Now I'm being told by a friend here who is an expert with the 70-72 Chevelles, that the round gauge dash stereo speaker brackets are different than the sweep dash stereo speaker brackets.
Can anyone confirm ?
I'll have this El Camino back this weekend to do some more "fitting".
I also need to look at the radio that the guy has bought. It's one of those factory originals with updated guts ??
I need to find out the speaker ohms requirements before I send the original speakers off for rebuilding.

BillK Sep 1st, 05, 10:10 PM Nate,
There is almost always a pair on e-bay. Here is just one I found. Might bid on them myself !

Bill, thank you very much, but those will not work.
The left side is very tight and the original speakers have a rectangular shaped magnet. The magnet on the left speaker is even turned to a different angle so that it will fit.
There is no way, and I mean absolutely no way those speakers would ever fit on the left side. He is false advertising when he says that they will fit 70-72 SS Chevelle. They will not.
Nate
(Confirmed)--- SS round gauge dash speaker brackets ARE different than the sweep gauge dash brackets on the drivers side!!! Your dash speakers will work with the correct brackets..... Stock radios used 10 ohm speakers!!
thanks mr.
I assume the stereo speaker brackets for an SS dash are hard to find ?
I guess it would be better to search for a 1970-72 Monte Carlo parts car ?
Or what about the 1970-72 Pontiac Grand Prix ?

rook1957 Sep 4th, 05, 3:08 PM Nate,
This may not go over to well with restoration perfectionists, I replaced my stock speackers with Metra 4x6 speakers, $10.00 each from AutoZone. They are 35 Watts and 4-8 OHM Compatible. The stock speaker magnet is 1.5 x 2.25. So I am only 5/8in wider in the width of the speaker. it is also 1/2 in shorter than the original which should help with clearence. (Here is where I may make someone angry) The speaker bracket had to be cut to clear the round magnet that is 2.75in in diameter. I drilled the rivets out of the mounting tabs on the stock speaker and riveted them on the replacements. Finding the location of the tabs was the tricky part, I used the corner that I cut off the original speakers to locate the holes on the replacements. I just bought a ss dash to put in the car and I am hoping that the modification will clear the gages. Sorry guys, On a Budget.

BillK Sep 4th, 05, 5:04 PM Nate,
Glad you said something ... just went out and looked at mine and you are correct, it does not look like the round magnet will fit. It will probably hit on the bracket. Also ... mine is a sweep type dash so I dont think it has anything to do with the SS dash.
Well, the stereo finally came and in the box is the instructions for mounting the speakers.
It says to remove the speaker from the supplied bracket and attach it to the original bracket.
I should have the dash pad off tomorrow and I'll post my findings.
I'm a bit skeptical, but we'll see.
