First of all, is your original column a tilt column? The tilt column ignition switches are not the same as the standard (non-adjustable) steering column switches. You will need to purchase the tilt column switch.

Now, if you are talking about the part that you stick your ignition key into, that is a lock cylinder. Lock cylinders are the same between the tilt and standard columns. You can remove the lock cylinder from your original column and install it into your new tilt column. You need to disassemble your original column down to the point where you can pull your turn signal switch up and out of the way. Then you can release your original lock cylinder. You then just plug the old lock cylinder into your new column.

The tilt and standard columns are similar in the lock cylinder areas but just a bit different. Following are complete instructions.

If you have a standard column, here are the instructions for removing your lock cylinder.

If your original column is a tilt column here are the instructions.

Good luck. The job is really quite easy.

I guess you are saying that you don't need the lock cylinder, you need the ignition switch that is mounted on top of the steering column jacket down under the dash.

The tilt column switch is still available through GM dealers #1990116 for a list price of $21.97. I am fairly sure that the switch is also available at most automotive supply stores.

There should be a small diameter rod that comes down from the column head that will engage your new switch.

There is a procedure for installing and adjusting the switch. These two papers should be of assistance.
