: Big Block Sound
figbash Aug 18th, 05, 10:22 PM I fired my 540 up for the first time and although it runs great, I was pretty disappointed in the sound. I'm running 2 1/8" headers, dual 3" exhaust with an X-pipe, through DynoMax Ultra-Flo ovals, with full tail pipes. I expected a lot deeper, throaty sound, but what I'm getting is a lot of high frequency stuff with very little on the low end. Any suggestions on how to get a deeper exhaust note?

Bob West Aug 18th, 05, 10:57 PM Lose the X pipe, or switch to race mufflers. I'm running 3" Dynomax Ultraflo welded ovals with an H pipe and dumps, deep and a bit much resonance at times.
Purs Aug 18th, 05, 11:13 PM Any suggestions on how to get a deeper exhaust note?
...switch to Magnaflows. The deep sound is exactly what I love about mine. I'm running 3" exhaust with no X or H though...
Yellow68SS Aug 19th, 05, 11:55 AM You got to ditch the X-pipe unfortunatly. My 468 went from a deep throaty sound just as you want to what you describe now.
I have even run with just the x-pipe and no mufflers and it still is kinda high pitch, i thought it was the spin techs but it could not be after i did that.
71454Chevelle Aug 19th, 05, 12:19 PM With my 454, I'm running a Dr Gas 3" X-Pipe with mandrel bent pipes all the way back (tail pipes included), Ultra Flo's and the tail pipes dumping right behind the rear tires.
The sound is of a bit higher frequency than what you would normally hear.
Under full throttle it kind of has a "scream" to it, and at 6500 rpm it's music to my ears!
figbash Aug 19th, 05, 1:23 PM ...and I did such a nice job making the X-pipe. Oh well, I can't have my kids small block Camaro sounding meaner than my big block Chevelle.
Thanks for the help.
Tom
JC70SS Aug 19th, 05, 2:03 PM Run 3" pipe back to flowmaster 40 series and no cross over pipe. You will like it much better. A lot of 5.0's run x pipes and have that high frequency tone.
69boo307 Aug 19th, 05, 2:07 PM I don't prefer the super deep sound myself. I prefer the 'ripping' racecar sound.
Jblack Aug 19th, 05, 3:17 PM I have a "H" pipe and 3" Ultra's that dump in front of the axle. Real throaty at idle...then it gets nice an loud when ou step on the go peddle...
Savage396 Aug 19th, 05, 4:46 PM Lose the X. True duals=deep. I like the higher winding sound the X gives me, sounds a bit more refined.
surfingreg Aug 19th, 05, 8:36 PM I have a 454 w/3" pipes and Flowmaster 40 series w/an H pipe....mine sounds pretty throaty if you ask me.....my neighbors think so too....

Try changing mufflers first. On my `65 Vette I wanted a better sound than stock so I put on DynoMax. A little better but still not the deep rumble I wanted. Changed again to Flow Master 40's and got what I wanted. A lot of guys don't like the natural sound of the FM's (like open pipes but from a distance) or the resonance inside the car (like open pipes) but I love it. A lot of other guys (probably never heard or appreciated the sound of open headers) prefer a smoother sound.
My El Camino (402) has 2" Hookers, H-pipe, FM 40's, and full length 2.5" pipes. The H-pipe quells the interior resonance but I still get that "bad boy" sound I love from the exhaust.
undee70ss Aug 20th, 05, 2:43 AM Heres mine, more than loud enough. 540, 2in headers 3.5 pipes, mufflers (flowmaster 3 champer) , and dumps.
KAA Aug 20th, 05, 11:00 PM I recently replaced my Flowmaster American Thunder 2 1/2", H-pipe, headers to tailpipe system with 3", X-pipe, Ultra Flow 6" round, no tailpipes. It now has a much deeper sound especially at idle. It really rumbles at idle and the car vibrates a lot more. It does sound completely different though. Hard to describe it. Not really high pitched, just different.
Redrum Aug 20th, 05, 11:20 PM I went with the Spin Tech mufflers, X-pipe and 3 inch full to the rear system. It is a VERY deep rumble at idle and fairly quiet off idle in comparison up to about 2500 to 2800 RPM's. Beyond that it belongs on the dragstrip though!
At idle you can easily hear it for 1/4 mile and wide open 1/2 mile.
70GS455 Aug 22nd, 05, 10:16 AM It's the x-pipe. Each tailpipe now has twice the amount of pulses coming out per unit of time - or in other words, twice the frequency (higher pitch).
X-pipe = UPS truck sound.
Doesn't sound like any UPS truck I've ever heard.
67RAT Aug 23rd, 05, 8:48 PM It's the x-pipe. Each tailpipe now has twice the amount of pulses coming out per unit of time - or in other words, twice the frequency (higher pitch).
X-pipe = UPS truck sound.
hooker 2 1/8,to 3 1/2--x pipe to hooker aeros to 3 inch tails--rather have the big dog howl than just growl--sounds nasty!!!!anyone want a ride in the big orange truck? ----70gs455--you are correct with your statement--all but the ups truck sound--come oooooooooonnnnn!!!!--67rat
Redrum Aug 24th, 05, 12:05 AM I have stepped x-pipes from 3.5 to 3.0 and it sure doesn't sound like any UPS truck I ever heard.
jhunt Aug 25th, 05, 12:35 PM I have a 66 with a 468ci with 2in into 3in and tried the Flowmaster super 40 s and it is a deeper sound as they are advertised as having a deeper sound than the regular 40s

mr 4 speed Aug 25th, 05, 1:18 PM I have 12+ year old Flowmasters on my 70 SS454...sure has its own unique sound :D
70GS455 Aug 25th, 05, 3:01 PM Ok, so maybe I was a little harsh in my assessment, forgive me. I have a buddy with a Dodge SRT-10 truck, and it's the one that sounds like UPS. A 12-cylinder Jag has a higher pitched exhaust just because there are 12 exh pulses instead of our normal 8. An x-pipe sytem (to my ears anyway) exhibits a similar kind of sound, just more pulses than I'm used to hearing (I'm old school). A true dual with no crossover sounds best (to me) just because the frequency is lower, but doesn't allow the most amount of hp. The X does have the most hp, and if that is most important, then that's the best solution.
OregonMalibu Aug 25th, 05, 7:52 PM The sound will richen up after you get some carbon in those mufflers. I just recently fired my 460 with 3.5" mandrel into some flowmaster 3.5 race 10's that dump before the rearend and my god it shook things off the walls of my garage. No one has complained , yet, but it will set off any car alarm in sight. It sounded very tinny at first but now has more of a fm tone. No ex pipe.
PaulR Aug 26th, 05, 7:28 AM After work yesterday I walked up to my neighbor's house where he was installing Gardner's chambered exhaust on his 69 Z28. I gave him a hand finishing it up, and got to hear it run. Definitely a pretty nasty bark to it. Interesting for me, though, because that's what I bought for my 70 Chevelle.
