: Paint choices
chevymad Feb 14th, 01, 7:57 PM I've got 2 paint projects coming up. An 87 firebird and my 64 malibu. And i'm trying to figure out what paint system to use. I've sprayed centari and martin senour's enamels on other rigs. I've had good luck with the martin senour plus i can get it at a discount through where i work, but i see they have several new systems out there. What would work best in a garage with a siphon gun? The firebird im kindof eyeing a midnight blue i recently saw on a new alero. Havent decided what color to paint the malibu yet. Any help guys? preferences?
64Larry Feb 16th, 01, 12:23 PM I have used Martin Senour's Ureglo, Polyurethane Enamel on my 1964 with excellent results. This is a single stage paint that is very forgiving as far as not running and if the area is not paint booth clean. I talked to the best body shop in town and this is what they use on trucks. It is a very durable paint and gives a deep shine. One precaution use a good respirator, something like a 3M 6000 series with filters for paint. The fumes are strong off this paint. Also If you are not aware MS has a FAX back number (1-800-526-6704)you can call and get data on how to mix and apply all their products. This paint for a siphon gun, which I use, sprays at about 70 PSI. You can thin the paint if you want to but straight out of the can is the design which makes it a little more expensive, but I get raves about the paint job when people see the car. My brother who rebuilds car has started using a similar paint from PPG.
big block lover! Feb 16th, 01, 9:14 PM I was just wondering here, why wouldnt you mix your paint with same brand reducer? Because Like most miracrale, or acrilac enamel paints the thinner you mix it the harder it is to paint but the shinnier the paint! WEll Just wondering,
Roy
If you pick a paint system, stick with the whole system.
it's not good to mix and match brands, you could run into problems, even later on down the line, and the manufacturer wont stand behind it.
The way the price of paint and meterials is today, you definately dont want to paint it twice.
do it right and do it once, you and your wallet will be a lot happier.
Good luck!

chevymad Feb 17th, 01, 8:17 PM thanx 64 larry. ureglo was the system i was looking at. u can get the mix info online too. i like the warning they give u bout only using it for a full paint job because itll be too glossy to match the original paint! sounds good to me. Its tough enough for trucks too? my c10 is getting quite chipped too. maybe ill try it there as well
THORSS70 Feb 18th, 01, 10:03 PM Hey chevymad, 9 years ago I sprayed my 70 with 21 line Glasurit, and it still looks almost brand new. Sikkens is a top line paint also, you will get what you pay for. PPG has a line of paint I believe chroma base system, I have no experience with this, but lots of painters like this alot. Keep in mind, to use all of the matched reducers and catalysts with the base, because it will save you troubles later on. Of course there are painers with exceptions, but you will not go wrong with the recomended line.
MARTINSR Feb 19th, 01, 1:02 PM THOR, ChromaBase is Dupont. PPG's basecoat is either DBC or DBU.

THORSS70 Feb 19th, 01, 2:04 PM I stand corrected, it has been a few years. I have sprayed PPG products frequently too, more than any other paint. You would think I remember that stuff. Anyway I always liked spraying PPG products, just flowed out better and looked better, personal preference. Also, is K-200 still on the market? That was my favorite high build primer, used that on my Chevelle, and the yellow color brightened up the red a little.
