: 2000 or 2400 converter
imchefbrian Aug 17th, 05, 5:10 PM ok, I am going with a new converter. just talked to B&M they said used 2000.
Mr 4 Speed suggested 2400.
what do you think
402, 350hp motor with 268xe cam
turbo 400 with stage 2 shift kit
3.31 open end rear
thanks
Steves65 Aug 17th, 05, 5:24 PM 2400... any less and you will waste your money. Better invest in something other than a peg leg rear end if ya wanna go fast.
If you really want to get technical on the stall speed you need to post a little more about the motor and power band. What rpm do you launch at? Shift point? What does the car run now? How tall are the tires?
Just some considerations that can make a big difference.
Steve
mr 4 speed Aug 17th, 05, 6:48 PM Trust me,the 2400 is what you want....I speak from experience.Ask the guy over at B&M when was the last time he raced his 4000 lb. big block Chevelle with one of these convertors :)
69bu Aug 17th, 05, 7:14 PM definitely at least a 2400
ddeennis Aug 17th, 05, 10:41 PM 2400 at least. .........what kinda numbers does the 268 cam have.......
Redrum Aug 17th, 05, 11:59 PM What are the cams .05 lift numbers?
I prefer a tighter convertor. I have an 2000 stall in the 12 second Corvette with a 230 at .05 cam. It has a 7004R tranny with only 4th gear lock-up.
I have a 2850 stall (tight 9 inch convertor with 11 inch clutch plate) in the Chevelle with the 2004R, BUT it is has a manual lock up convertor. The looser covertor bugs me a lot when cruising as we have a lot of hills where I live and that is why I went with the manual lockup.
So, If I did not have lock-ups and a engine with 230 or less at .05 I would not go over a TIGHT 2000 RPM convertor. I believe in excellent street manners on any car I put together.
imchefbrian Aug 18th, 05, 2:45 PM ok, here are some specs on the cam,
at .05 intake 218 exhaust 218
gross velve lift .0485
lobe lift .2853
now I have spoken to B&m twice, both guys say the 2000
What was the stock converter? 1800 that does not seem like much of a diff?
I am concerned that it will not be as streetable if I go to the 2400. Or can I miss the powerband at that point?
thanks, please help!
mr 4 speed Aug 18th, 05, 2:50 PM Brian,I will say it again.... :)
Get the 2400
I have had this convertor in my car for 4 years now,3 years of it was with 2.56 gears and now I have 3.31's
There are NO streetability concerns with this convertor.
I have recently used this convertor in 1980 Malibu that has a stock 454 with a 220 duration .440 lift cam and 3.42 gears.
Needless to say,the owner of the car is very, very happy with this whole set up.
imchefbrian Aug 18th, 05, 2:58 PM I know I know but I like to torture myself with making a choice along with hearing the keys tap as I punch on the keyboard
mr 4 speed Aug 18th, 05, 3:06 PM I know I know but I like to torture myself with making a choice along with hearing the keys tap as I punch on the keyboard
:D
Torture is not required...I've all ready been down the road on the debate of which convertor 4 years ago.
It always helps when someone has been "there" before.
ddeennis Aug 18th, 05, 3:10 PM stock stall is right at 1800 rpms. dont even bother going thru the work if you feel you must have the 2000 rpms. you really aint going to see no difference at all and your going to feel cheated.
if you going with a stall go with at least a 2400 rpms stall. you will just start to feel a difference with this convertor. it will act so stock when taking off. the only time you will know its any kind of a stall is when you are power braking it and if you got one heck of a hill to climb other then that you really not going to notice it in there.
im running a 2400 to 2800 stall in my z28 that stalls at 2600 rpms and i run 2.73 gears out back in a 3900 lbs car. even this convertor is just barely noticable.
if your going with a stall specially for your set up up use the 2400 or dont bother. i went thru the same ordeal building my z28 started out with a 1600 rpm stall, was not happy then a 1800 stall and was not happy then a 2100 stall and was not happy and now the 2600. which was perfect combination, just loose enough for launchs but tight enough i can cruise down the highway with my 2.73 gears.
imchefbrian Aug 18th, 05, 3:13 PM ok, b&m holeshot? or is there another that would do better.
a guy on e-bay has got one for $85.00 with shipping that came out of his 71 chevelle 396. You think I should buy new in this situation?
thanks Mr 4 Speed
mr 4 speed Aug 18th, 05, 8:49 PM Brian,go new..please :)
Yes,the 2400 Holeshot is the one you want
Dennis,thanks for posting..good to know you're around
Brian..Dennis is another guy that's been there, done that and speaks from experience with no BS,and he's the 396 king in my book.
Sandy Aug 19th, 05, 2:04 AM I have a 2400 converter and it performs very much like a stock converter.
I have had the same discussions with B&M regarding going to a 3000 holeshot for my combination. They insist that I don't need anything more than a 2400.
Sounds like they prefer to recommend on the low side.
jakeshoe Aug 19th, 05, 2:40 AM I've had good luck with the Summit brand converters...
A stock converter may be 1800 behind a torquey 396, but most "2400" converters will actually flash to around 3000-3200 behind a mild BBC. Footbrake to the 2800 area...
I like a milder converter. Had a 10" ~3200 rated converter behind the 505 in a '78 Camaro with 3.42's and it was too much converter. I bought a Hughes 2500 to replace it with, but sold the whole setup today...
I am also using a "Roadrunner" converter off Ebay in my 200-4R. It is a stock diameter converter, but is rated at about 2400 and works well with the 200-4R, 3.73's, and seems to actually footbrake at the rated stall speed.
I'm a cheap bastid when it comes to converters. The only "brand name" converter I ever bought turned into the biggest disappointment performance-wise as well as customer service.
I don't like alot of the B&M products, but their off-the-shelf converters also seem to be decent.
jakeshoe Aug 19th, 05, 2:41 AM Forgot to mention,
if you DO go with a B&M, go with a Holeshot, not the Torkmaster...
imchefbrian Aug 19th, 05, 7:28 AM ok, B&m holeshot 2400, what should I expect to pay for installation?
good thing it's my B-day and the Wify keeps asking me what I want for it beside the usual ;)
Great now I will need the POSI unit :D
