I'm looking to put a cowl hood on my 66 Chevelle. A big block is going under it so I figured the better air flow would help...plus they just look awesome! My question is how big is too big? I've heard of them going up to 9 inches.

As for how big is too big, that's completely up to you. I personally do not like the look of them when they get over 4". If they get too big John Law may step in and cite you for obstructed view, depending on your local/state laws. Unless you plan on going the tunnel ram route, the 4" cowl can accommodate a whole lotta big block. Maybe some guys here will post pics of different height hoods on their cars.

IMO, anything above 2 inch cowl on a street car just looks "gawdy" (like the scrawny guys that like to wear muscle shirts or a fat guy in an Iron Man Decathlon shirt - just a "somethin aint right with this picture" type deal).

'My take - pro-street and need the room, use the hood that you need.

Street car and want to maintain a tough but clean look and just need a little clearance for, say, a hi-rise intake - 2-2 1/2 inch cowl hood.

Plus, it sucks trying to make right turns or park when you cannot see past a big arse dome on the hood.

I have the 2" goodmark hood on my 66 now. It looks goood from the outside but inside I think it could be about anothr inch higher.4" would be the max.
