i just bought a '68 Chevelle that was a drag car at one time and had the dash cut out including the VIN tag. is there any other places on the car where i can get the vin tag? the guy i bought it from has the title for it, but its been more than 7 years since its been registered so it has dropped off the DMV's computer records. anyone had any experience titleing a car with a similar situation?
thanks,
chris

If the car has the original frame it should have a partial on the drivers side behind the rear wheel (on the frame). Another spot is under the heater box on the firewall. Will the car need an inspection for the VIN? If not take the title into DMV and have it transferred. After it is your name it will be a lot easier to go through the bureaucratic nightmare of DMV to get a VIN on the car. In CA are you going to need to pay back registrations for it being unlicensed? I bet no matter what it will be an uphill battle. Good Luck :)

well, part of the problem is while i won't have to pay back registration on it because once it's off the computer you start fresh. the problem is that they need to verify the vin number on the car to transfer me the title and get me a new one so im sure im in for a big hassle.
thanks,

I'm no expert by any means but where was your car originally built? You should be able to tell from the vin on the title. I have a 69 Chevelle built in Kansas (K in the vin) and it has a partial vin stamped under the heater box. It is a pro street car so the heater box went away a while ago and the vin is plain as day.

On my 70 SS hardtop built in Atlanta there were no numbers on stamped under the heater box whatsoever but the rear frame rail behind the passenger rear wheel on the top side of the frame is where the parital vin is stamped. (A in the vin)

My convertible 70 SS was built in Baltimore and it has not been apart since I bought it. I got it real cheap in 1990 from a local guy so I was not concerned with finding the hidden partial vin nor did I even know it existed back then. I can't tell you where I would find it. (B in the vin)

Hope this helps. By the way, is the car back-halved? If so no need to waste time looking for the rear frame rail vin unless the factory rails were moved in.

I never found my VIN on the framerail but the one under the blower motor is clear as day.... I took pictures because my dash VIN looks like hell....
