: Convertible Top - Frame Mounts

I posted a few days back, got no response, so maybe my question wasn't too clear.

I have a 69 Chevelle convertible. My question relates to the area where the convertible top frame bolts to the body of the car on the inside of each quarter just behind the bottom of the rear side windows. Are washers used between the frame and the quarter panel to properly space the top from the car body or is there another adjustment to provide clearance between the top and the car's body?

The side of my top has started to rub against the car when I lower it. It just rubs on each side for about the first inch in the area right behind the base of the rear side windows and then there is enough clearance. Seems there needs to be a little more clearance. I'd like to take a picture and post, but I'm not sure how to do that right now.

Can anyone assist???

Thanks.

Those heavy brackets bolt directly to the inside of the car. There are no washers in between . There is a fairly large washer with points attached to the mounting bolt. There are 3 bolts/washers on the drivers side & 2 bolts/washers on the passenger side.
I would check the condition of the various bushings . Some are plastic and there are 2 bronze bearings that go above the rear side windows ( the shoulder part had separated from the bushing part on mine) .
My car is a 69 Malibu convertible built in Oshawa ont. Hope this helps

Thanks guys. Here's the outcome.

I went to a local cruise-in and talked to a guy who had a Chevelle vert that he had restored. He also was an old GM guy and quite knowledgeable. He said that it was common practice to use washers between the convertible frame mounts and the body of the car as long as everything else checked out okay - bushings, no bent parts, etc. There were two washers already on my car and he suggested I just add a third, since all that was needed was a minor adjustment. I added a third washer and voila, works like a charm.

He said some cars might not need any washers and some may need a few - the build tolerances just weren't all that critical back then.

At any rate, thanks for your responses.
