540 BBC Dyno and Fitech Meanstreet & Command Center Install

After 2 years of engine in my 72 Chevelle having continuous breathing issues decided it was time to take it out & have a look. Engine was built by a US based Engine Building business that a friend of a friend was the distributor for here in Australia, I had Chevelle sent there after buying at NSRA Show in Knoxville in 2013 before shipping here to replace the 350 SBC & TH-350 with 540 BBC & TH400.

Engine was tested & numbers were 600hp @ 5300 and 675lb.ft @ 3300, setup was and still is a set of Edelbrock E-Force 110cc Head (now called E-Street), believe Heads would have been purchased bare, so further work could have been done, feature 1.72 JEGS Rockers with a 01-418-8 Comp Cams so looking around 0.510 lift, manifold is a Performer RPM being fed by a QuickFuel HR780-VS, exhaust exits through a set of Hookers Comp Headers.

Plan is to dyno as it is now with same jetting that saw it run mid 11s, then a bit of tuning, after that swap to a bigger carby and see if it pay dividends. Then will be taken off dyno and remove the heads for inspection, will be replacing Head Bolts with Studs, will be switching to a Single Plane Manifold so will require some port matching & perhaps further work to Heads, will then bolt back to dyno and test initially with a carby then fit Fitech Meanstreet EFI System.

While engine is out will go about preparing to fit Command Centre behind battery, hopefully get started this weekend.

Re: 540 BBC Dyno and Fitech Meanstreet & Command Center Install

I would think a 540 would benefit from a bigger carb.
I think more so with a dual plane intake.

It's nice to see an engine on a dyno with it's actual accessories as it sits in the engine bay.
Less power steering of course.

Final results were 540hp @ 5050 & 640lb.ft @ 3700, as you can see in video below is not in good shape, rebuild on the cards, some head work, maybe new more aggressive cam, going to become a two month process from being a two week in & out job, pretty much the 'Rule of x4' coming into effect again.

So it made 600 hp with a carb and only 540 hp with the Meanstreet EFI?

No, my bad, that was end results for how the Engine came out of the car to establish some base figures, will not be fitting the EFI Kit until later, much later now.

The 600hp figure is what original engine builder claimed, turns out they were dodgy and as of late the company has pretty much dissolved.

Oh okay. I think its just built like a tow motor. Maybe contact Chris Straub and see what he thinks would wake it up. Getting your peak HP around 5800-6000 would make a huge diff. I bet there is an easy 100 hp with a few changes that move the RPM range up around 800 rpm.

Yes 650hp @ 6000 is the target, start tearing down tonight, will be interesting to see what is inside.

Keep us posted. A 540ci making 540hp is not nearly what that motor should be doing for you. I think at least a cam swap is imminent.

Re: 540 BBC Dyno and Fitech Meanstreet & Command Center Install

Prepared the Command Center for installation on the weekend, cut out a template of larger diameter of tank and placed in Guard to determine correct location then marked center, drilled the center hole from the top using battery drill, then after removing guard brace from underneath using a cut a Hole with a 4" Holesaw, gave newly cut edge a lick of paint, then surrounded with a Rubber Channel to provide a snug fit on Command Center, dampen vibration & prevent met on metal contact. Prior to to final install with use some foam tape on underside of Command Center to act as buffer between metal surface, will also use one of the supplied brackets underneath to secure and prevent lifting.

Found SRP Forged Flat Top Pistons, SCAT Forged Rods and an Eagle Cast Crank with a Part Number of 039142506385-C which I cannot find referenced anywhere, checked Eagle's Catalogs back to 2010 and they only list current part number of 104564250, which is a External Balanced Cast Steel Crank rated to 700HP but would be dubious launching off the Trans-Brake in future with engine making more power.

Re: 540 BBC Dyno and Fitech Meanstreet & Command Center Install

Well this got out of hand quickly, Block is off being Acid Washed, Crack Tested then Bores are being Honed, Heads are being Ported & Milled, I CC'd them to discover are 115cc, not 110cc as specified, Compression was around 9.5:1, increasing this to 10.5:1, Heads are being matched to Gasket, when they return will be my turn to match them to Intake.

Was going to have Cam reground to Spec but Machinist was not interested so found a Howards Cam that closely matched, did away with the JEGS Chinese Rockers as 6 out of 16 were not in good shape, am replacing with some Crane Gold 1.8 Rockers, the Cast Crank was done away in favor of a SCAT Forged so new Balancer & Flexplate was also required, the Starter wasn't happy cranking over the BBC and with imminent Compression increase decided a 3hp CVR Starter was in order.
