66 super sport chevelle eBay

1966 Chevrolet Chevelle sport coupe | eBay

So I was really interested in this 66 SS. I was watching the damn thing like a hawk and was really hoping to bid on it. I called and spoke to the owner and he assured me all was good with the car. No rust and that it really only needed body work and paint. He said the under side was super clean. He also mentioned that the title didn't match the Vin numbers. But that it was a common mistake with older cars. And that it was indeed a true SS.

So I make the trip down to San Diego and decide I'm gonna look at it before dropping some hard earned money. I get there, and kind of snoop around the car before he comes out. And I notice the entire trunk is rusted out. And the driver floor boards have nickel size holes rusted through.

He then comes out. And we talk. I ask him to start the car. And he tells me he has to control the idle because he takes the electronic choke off all his cars(and that it was still cold). He then shuts the car off quickly never letting it idle. We open the hook and i notice the vin plate by the window in the engine bay. Is all perfect minus the first number or letter has been punched in- making it impossible to read. Also the top corner of the vin tag was peeled back a bit. I then ask him about it. And he directs me to the vin on the inside of the car. And tells me to focus on that one.

We chit chat for a bit and I left. I never bid on the car because everything seemed super shady and the guy was lying about everything.

So ultimately I didn't know the value of the car. And I was wondering what you guys thought.

I think you were pretty smart to check out the car in person. Also you followed your instincts and let the car go by.

Good for you.

Although it is hard to find 66 SS Chevelles, it is not impossible. there will always be another.

The VIN tag would be on the driver's door jam, not under the hood.

The body trim tag under the hood is nothing to worry about. (except in Oklahoma)

Re: 66 super sport chevelle eBay

Back a few years ago I went to look at a black 66 SS also. The car had just too much that had to be done to it to bring it up to where I wanted it to be. The thing that really got me was on one of the rear quarter panels up above the emblem was a stove bolt that was painted black. I too walked away from it. Just by looking at the pictures of the one you were looking at I wouldn't have even considered looking at it. A lot of people won't admit to it but I bought my present car sight unseen and was disappointed when I found out it wasn't as advertised. It was faked as being a frame off even though by the pictures it looked like one. Even though it wasn't I'm not really sorry I bought the car other than what I paid for it. I went through the car pretty well jacking it off the frame replacing the body mount bushings, all brake and fuel lines and detailing the car out to the best of my ability. The car came out pretty decent and I'm proud of it and my advise to you is always go and check out what your buying before you do. The cars are out there you'll find what your looking for and you will look back and say boy I'm glad I didn't buy that one.

71 Malibu, 396BBC, 4 speed, 12 bolt.

Doesn't the body tag have the vin on it as well?
Is this tag considered less important?

The trim tag will include the year, body series, color, plant, etc, but not the VIN. This link will explain

Re: 66 super sport chevelle eBay

I would be concerned about the tittle not matching the vin plate. that is NOT a common mistake

No the VIN is on the VIN tag, not the trim tag.
Yes the trim tag is very much less important.
It really wouldn't even matter all that much if the trim tag was M.I.A.

But from your description, looks you probably did the right thing by passing on the car.

Re: 66 super sport chevelle eBay

Thanks guys! All the info is appreciated. I kept reading about the vin being on the cowl and on the door. I guess I thought the trim tag was the second one that I should be looking at. But regardless. Why the body tag and surrounding area were all painted black without any noticeable dents or imperfections, expect for the first letter or number on the trim tag. It just seemed really odd.

X2 if the title does not match the vin, I would run. That is a show stopper, and I have left a couple sellers over that item.

66 Malibu Coupe, home rebuilt 350. Took me 39 years to get her!
