Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

Did you notice Monte Carlo #1 is being sold by the same person as the 1966 Impala SS convertible you brought up yesterday.

I think I'd be more interested in that one. He had a better description and pictures.

Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

Both are pretty rough but the first one has pics showing it's a true SS car, the lift pump for the rear air shocks. $8K for an all correct parts included car in rough condition is just about right.

Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

The first one with build sheet looks relatively complete and numbers matching. The 70 Monte SS I found was on Craigslist advertised as an SS but no paperwork but air tank was still there as we're most of the correct parts. It had been looked at by more than one person but nobody bought it. I bought it with a parts car knowing it was an SS. Got it home and tore every interior piece out, no sheet! Dropped gas tank and there was a pristine build sheet! Love it when a plan comes together!

Here is one that is done. You'd probably have as much (or more) money in restoring one of those.

Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

Nice rare cars that actually took over for the Impala SS427. John Delorean took over at Chevrolet and his direction was felt for the 1970 model year. He was fresh from replacing the 2+2 type Big cars at Pontiac with the A-special Grand Prix SJ which was a huge success.

Those Monte Carlos are both fairly loaded cars and would be challenging to restore. I notice one only has an AM radio and the other an AM 8-track. The one with the build sheet shows a tall 2.56:1 rear axle ratio (the brochure shows the 3.31 ratio is standard on the SS454). It is generally understood that all production Monte Carlo SS454s came with the LS5/M40 drivetrain, though there have been claims of M22s and even LS6s (doubtful in either case but you never know...)

I remember the first Monte Carlo SS454 I ever saw, an Autumn Gold 70 model back in the early 70s. It had the rectangular tips on it along with Rally Wheels & G70x15 white stripe tires. The sighting was in my home town near Hamilton, Ontario. I don't think I have seen another in person since, except for a white 71 at the Northern Chevelle Gathering about 10 years ago.

For whatever reason the values have not kept up with the Chevelle SS. That Green Mist one that novadude posted looks like great value for the money.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

I was looking at the pictures of the #1 car and there is a picture of the engine stamp and I am not sure what I am looking at. It appears the block is cracked and broken. Is that what you guys are seeing. My eyes are not good. I also agree the best one is the one that Novadude brought up. Looks like a pretty nice car for the money. You could not buy the #1 or #2 car and restore them for the price of the green car.

I see what you see there but it's just a shadow. Saving the pic then flipping it makes it a little clearer to see.

I think he means above the T for Tonawanda. That is not a shadow.

It's not a crack. That is the block to head mating surface. The pic is not rotated correctly...

Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

I didn't see the "SS454" badges anywhere on either of those Monte's.I know all the early MC's have a VIN that starts with 138, so is that why they are both being listed as Monte Carlo SS cars ? Also I think it was possible to get a 454 in a Monte Carlo in those early years.

You could get a 396/402 in a Monte Carlo, but the 454 was only available with the SS in 1970 and 1971.

If you look very closely at pictures of both cars you can see the SS454 emblems on the front fender rocker panel trim. You can't make out what is says, but that is where the emblems were located. I've never seen any other Monte Carlo with emblems in that location.

Re: Two '70 Monte SS454 Projects

Correct. The 454 was only available in the Z20 SS package. Required and included options with the 1970 Z20 package:

-Fender rocker emblems
-LS5 454 engine
-3 speed automatic transmission (TH400)
-12 bolt rear
-Airlift rear shocks
-Rally wheels
-Rear sway bar and thicker front sway bar
-Dual exhaust with resonators and chromed rectangular tips.

1971 added:

-Blacked out rear filler panel
-SS emblem on rear filler panel
-Additional moldings above rear filler panel
-Rear bumper rub strip (deleted when rear bumper guards were ordered)

NOT included in the SS package:

-Positraction rear
-Bucket seats, floor shifter, gauge package.

-Could NOT be had with the SS package:

-LS6 454 engine
-4 speed manual transmission
-Cruise control (the airlift pump went where the cruise control unit goes)
-Rear fender "limo" skirts.

Although it's be claimed many times, no 1970/1971 SS 454 Monte Carlos have ever been documented to have the LS6 and/or 4 speed manual transmission.

FWIW,I have seen (2) 1970 SS454 Monte Carlos over the years with (confirmed by the buildsheet) 2.56 gears.
