Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

Do you have pictures? Are the intake and carb stock or aftermarket? Does it come with brackets and pulleys?

If you can hear it run it's most likely worth the money. If it's sold as a lump on the ground, that's a crap shoot.

Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

Too much $'s for a 402 engine with unknown internals. Consider it a rebuildable core. Complete with all the exterior brackets $200-300.tops. Without brackets, $200.

Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

Technically not a 402 in 68, unless it was punched.

A bit much for something that has sat for two years. Was it rebuilt prior to that? Doesn't look like it has been touch, which is good and bad.

At the very least I would want to see it with the pan, TC cover, and heads off. If it visually checked I'd throw a gasket set and valves seals just get by.

Got a number on the carb?

TC # 4348

Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

It looks like its more used up, than used. For what he is asking I would want something that was ready to be dropped in and run, as is.

Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

Think I can find a 396 ready to run for that or look for a 454 and be done? I want a driver but I also want to run the ss emblems and I don't know if I can bring myself to do that with a small block lol

Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

I think it's too much since you can't hear it run... it doesn't make sense to pay that much and budget on a rebuild (cores are cheaper! $250)....

For a budget motor to stick in your chevelle i'd consider this one (or keep looking!), off of craigslist in IA:
454 stroker to 427. fresh rebuild, built for 450hp, never installed in a vehicle. complete less carb. and dist. asking 2000/obo. call 712-621-2750

Re: 68 chevelle 396/402

Its what I am looking for, but it would seem to be a core to rebuild to me.

66 Malibu Coupe, home rebuilt 350. Took me 39 years to get her!

IMHO it is not low balling if its only worth what you're offering.

If you borrow something more than once, you need your own!

Why not? It's still not an SS396 regardless of the engine but people put SS396 and Super Sport script on 66 Malibus all the time.

Agree on the other comments, probably too much for essentially a core.
