The sellers says its standard bore, it has no cracks and he guarantees it... IMO, $600 is a good price...

Gareentee its what? I guess if one can make up a word, one can make up the spelling to go along with it.

Good thing it was like that when he baught it.

Sounds like a buy if one needs a 4-bolt main block. I'd ask for the machine shop that baked and magnafluxed it for a written report that nothing was found or be ready to have it done again.

Re: L78 four bolt 396/402

Something doesn't jive. L of 70 date is not a '70 production engine. CKQ is not a '70 code....with all the other aforementioned spelling errors (but spelled "magnaflux" correctly... ) it could be a L of 69 block, with a CKO code. Even at that, L of 69 would be awful close to the end of Chevelle L78 production, 12/8/69. It COULD however, be a Nova motor as they used the CKO block as well....

Authentication and pre-purchase inspection service still available. PM me for more information.
Still looking for that elusive 76 Nova SS.

Re: L78 four bolt 396/402

I too was kinda shocked he got "magnafluxed" right. CKO, CKQ, L 5 70, L 5 69, what's a letter or number between friends, right? After all, who's going to check the castings or stampings before layout out $600?

I do show CKO as a 70 L78 w/manual trans and CKQ as a 70 L78 w/manual trans & H.D. clutch but certainly not in December of 1970.

Re: L78 four bolt 396/402

And even if it was cast December 5th, it would have never got to an assembly plant in time to be used before the Chevelle L78 option was done. Last known L78 was built Dec. 8th.

Colvin's 1970-1975 by the Numbers book, page 57; Peter Sessler's Ultimate American V-8 Engine Book, nastyz28.com's web page at http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...-suffix-12.php; teufert.net's page at http://www.teufert.net/bbchevy/bbcodes.htm; Catalog of Chevelle Malibu & El Camino ID Numbers 1964-87, page 68; Chevrolet's own Parts & Accessory Catalog under General Information.

Two others I have absolutely no confidence in, one being John Gunnel's Standard Catalog of American Muscle Cars 1960-1972 and Paul Herd's infamous Chevelle SS Restoration Guide, 1964-1972; and chevellebigblock.com's PDF page at http://www.chevellebigblock.com/pdf/...ngineCodes.pdf.

Maybe they're all (except for the Chevrolet Parts book) just regurgitating bad info, can't say for certain. I will say though that of the 12 1970 L78 cars in my registry, 10 are 4-speeds and all are CKO.

Re: L78 four bolt 396/402

I have a reference that shows CKQ as '70 Chevelle AND '70 Nova with L78 and manual trans with HD clutch. Probably from a '70 Nova L78 with HD clutch.

Re: L78 four bolt 396/402

Novas and Camaros still used the L78 later than Chevelles in 1970. Just because it was cancelled in the Chevelle doesn't mean it was cancelled in Novas and Camaros.

Couldn't get the LS6 in those cars remember? And they used the same engine codes in all three - Camaro -Chevelle -Nova

Alrighty then........

That's what I was getting at. It could've possibly been used in a late '69 Camaro as well, since the '69 model year Camaro was extended into early '70 calendar year. Or a '70 Camaro.

Hey Von.
But wouldn't a block dated Dec 5 1970 be for the 71 production year? I bet the owner has something wrong with the listing.

Dave, the 2 sites that I use for engine codes both show the CKQ code for 1970 Chevelles and Novas. See the links below.
