Buying a car without a title??

What are your opinions about this? I have bought several non titled project cars over the years but never bought one to keep. Its a $6500.00 69 Camaro so its a lot of money to end up with a parts car. I know there are bonded titles and Broadway Title and similar companies that do the Alabama title. Anyone had experience with either? The last thing I want is to spend a bunch of money building a car and title problems showing up later.

Re: Buying a car without a title??

I just purchased a 72 SS out of OKLAHOMA and went to my Courthouse in Alabama to get the title transfered and they would not do it. They said they do not title cars under 75 so I purchased the tag and left there with a OK title and a Notrized form to staple with my Ok tiltle with the disclaimer on the reason for non-titled car so if I were to sell it later.

Re: Buying a car without a title??

Its real not a big deal buying a car without a title as long as you do your homework first. Have the vin ran to make sure its not stolen and/or have any leins on the car. If everything checks out good, get a noterized bill of sale from the owner. You should be good to go.

I would also check with your DMV every state is different.

Look up Steve Huffman on this site, he goes by HuffHuff. He provides the same service at a fraction of the cost. I needed an out of state bill of sale in Fl. to apply for a title, once you get the application at DMV, you take the car to the local PD and they run a VIN check and notorize the application for you and then DMV will issue a new title.

Is there a place that does a national vin check other than the DMV? I would want to check it out before it was purchased.

Re: Buying a car without a title??

I would think that the highway patrol would run a check on it for you and also tell you what to do.

It would really suck buying a stolen car and loosing all your money when it get confiscated.

Re: Buying a car without a title??

I also need info on this as Braodway title will not have anything to do with Kentucky. Why? Dont know. They also told me a few other states that do not accept business. I think its all the commonwealth states but dont quote me. Its a real shame also since i have turned down all kinds of "deals" because of this. Ohio is my closest state and they will honor Ohio. Kind of makes sense to get an Ohio address for a couple of weeks to get my titles straightened out. Can anyone else help on this?

The DMV or and State Police or even local Police should be able to do that.

Re: Buying a car without a title??

What state is the car in now? And what does the owner say as to why he doesn't have a title?

Especially after driving 60 mph thru a school zone...

Like I've mentioned before...some states never even issued a title on older cars when they were BN.
I know NY didn't start issuing titles until the 1973 model year.
So ANY '64-72 Chevelle bought new in New York would have never had a title. GA will reissue a title if there has been one used in the vehicle's sale...but it is not a requirement. Ownership can be transfered on a Bill of Sale.

Re: Buying a car without a title??

As you are in Texas , have the VIN run by DPS. If it comes back that it was last registered in Texas a lot of the problems have been eliminated. What kind of story is the person who has possession of the car telling. He certainly cannot prove ownership at this point.

You should not do anything until you see where the VIN leads.
