Shuffle Steering: do you use it?

I only recently heard of this technique in which the hands are kept on the lower portions of the steering wheel, and the wheel is turned by pulling down with the appropriate hand. This technique of putting the hands at 8 o'clock and 4 o'clock will take some time to adjust to.

Only thing I ever drove with my hands at 4 and 8 was a go-kart... at 65 MPH...

This technique came about to keep you from getting broken limbs when the air bags go off..... unexpectedly.

Re: Shuffle Steering: do you use it?

Use it for autocross. The only time your hands cross the vertical plane of the center of the steering wheel is during a slalom. And it's actually 9-3 or 10-2

As usual, Andy is right
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

I use it all the time now. I first started when I started autocrossing and now do it pretty much all the time.

Depends on which hand I'm using to hold my beer.

I believe this was discussed by captive Texas Highway Safety Officer in the 1974 movie The Sugarland Express.

One of my favorites (and Steven Spielberg's first movie released in theaters).

Re: Shuffle Steering: do you use it?

Back in the day - bench seat + muscle car + 4 speed + hot date = no time to shuffle steer. Now I just 1 finger the power steering and check all the gauges!

Re: Shuffle Steering: do you use it?

If it takes 2 hands for you to control (steer) your car, you probably have no business driving...

you don't drive thru a lot of twisty roads at high speeds, do you?

spend a little time on a road course or dodging cones in a parking lot sometime and show us how to do it with one hand..

Those twisty mountain roads in Kansas come to mind.

Re: Shuffle Steering: do you use it?

Been steering like that for at least a few years, didn't know it was called shuffle steering. Probably started after shoulder surgery, just seemed an easier way to hold the wheel/steer.
