umm which way does this gasket go?

i put these aluminum exhaust gaskets on made leak worse so im guessing i put it on backwards??

on side is recessed... i put the lip facing out towards the header thinking it would seal around the flange?

here is the gasket and see pics below.

Bull, the only choice YOU have left it is to try the other side no matter what anyone says.

Re: umm which way does this gasket go?

I had one header that kept leaking with numerous new gaskets. Turned out that Hooker didn't do a good weld around one port on the header which didn't let the gasket seal properly. causing that ugly tick tick tick tick.

Re: umm which way does this gasket go?

I would have thought flat side to the header. The head is always a good surface to seal to so that doesn't need help. The headers are junk, so they need a surface that will mold to it.

Re: umm which way does this gasket go?

I know this post is kind of old, but I had the same question and I couln'd find an answer here. I got on Percy's website and they had a Q&A section....here's what they say.

“Which way do I install the Seal-4-Good Flange Gaskets?” A: With the exception of the Big Block Ford Part #66035, all flange gaskets are installed with the smooth side out. There is a smooth rounded side and a sharp cut side, this sharp side goes on the head and the smooth side goes on the header flange.

Re: umm which way does this gasket go?

Chevelle Header Quick Installation Guide v6.4b

Step 1: Install headers - remove headers, tweak pipe clearances and reinstall headers
Step 2: Remove headers and tweak clearances again, reinstall and tighten bolts. Start car:
Step 3: scratch head at tickticktick leaking sound
Step 4: flip gaskets, retighten and start car
Step 5: repeat step 3
Step 6: re-tighten bolts again
Step 7: repeat step 3
Step 8: replace gaskets supplied with headers with "extra high quality super duper guaranteed no-leak" header gasket, tighten bolts and start car
Step 9: repeat step 3
Step 10: remove headers, sell on eBay, install cast iron manifolds, tighten bolts, drive car.

:-)

Re: umm which way does this gasket go?

i got them installed right and they are the best thing ever. sounds gr8 with no tick.

running cast iron manifolds is silly unless you got an all original car.

Re: umm which way does this gasket go?

If you want to really get a good seal, have the headers surfaced at a competent machine shop. Install copper gaskets. (Or NO gaskets at all). Use the Stage 8 locking bolts.

Lucky for me it was...

Bead blast shipping paint off
Spray high temp paint on
Slip headers in and bolt up with supplied gaskets
Check for clearance around things
Push both headers in towards the oil pan to gain clearance around a-arm pockets
fire up and bake the high temp paint on
Let cool a few minutes and re-snug up the bolts
Enjoy

Never really had a problem using cheepo header gaskets, just need to be snugged up after the first 5 short drives or so.
