Old vacuum gauge, pic

I use to go to a lot of wrecking yards growing up and loved to collect gauges. Mostly clocks and tachs. Every now and then one will turn up in a box somewhere. Dose anyone know if this was an aftermarket unit or mabey an option for some car?

Cool old gauge

Several years ago a lot of people added simular gauges, the idea was to keep the needle in the "economy" range for best gas milage.

Re: Old vacuum gauge, pic

I'd bet it was an aftermarket, several cars did have a vacuum gauge as an option, but they'd typically be branded with the car manufacturers name (the most common ones I see are Pontiacs), or at least have whatever cheesy name the manufacturer chose for it as an option name printed on it. Does look pretty 60's to 70's time period, so would fit right in and look at home in most any classic.

Vacuum gauges are a cool gauge to have in a car, I like gauges that move a lot, and with a heavy foot you can sure make 'em move

Re: Old vacuum gauge, pic

Pic is not showing up. I remember in the early 70s, with the oil embargo and resulting gas shortage, a lot of people started buying vacuum gauges. IIRC, if you kept the needle steady, you got better milage. Some had a red zone and a green zone.

Haven't thought of that in ages!

Re: Old vacuum gauge, pic

Pic comes up ok for me. The gauge still works well, I was thinking it would be fun to hook it up, but my car only makes about 8in of vacuum at idle. It would never reach the Economy section anyway!

Can't see the pic either. I went to your album and don't see it there either.

Works now. That looks like a aftermarket gauge.

Definate aftermarket, made by Sun Instruments. Cool find.

Re: Old vacuum gauge, pic

Were Sun guages ever factory or dealer options? I thought they were all aftermarkets. Picture in original post shows up fine. My friend in high school had a vacuum gauage he bought for his Cortina GT, he got tired of trying to drive in the economy range anyway.
